Liverpool have no chance of winning the Premier League

I've been toying with the idea of writing a blog analysing the impact that this summer's international tournaments including the AFCON and Copa America may have on the clubs challenging for the top spots in the 2019/20 Premier League but to be honest the subject seemed a little dry. Therefore, I thought why not make the topic a little more controversial, why not see I can get @phil.newton to flag my post ;-)

Liverpool had an incredible 2018/19 season achieving the 3rd highest points tally in Premier League history with 97 points as well as winning the European Cup. The problem is that the side that beat them to last year's title with 98 points is also the side who the year prior to that became the first EPL side to win 100 points in a season. Whatever you may think about City and the way they go about their business they seem capable at the very least of maintaining very high standards if not improving upon them. Can the same be said of Liverpool?

16-year-old prodigy Harvey Elliot is an exciting talent but will he help close the gap between Liverpool and City?

It's been a quiet summer for Liverpool with just a couple of young players in Sepp van den Berg and Harvey Elliott signing for the club. With neither player likely to break into the first team anytime soon it may well be that both are farmed out on loan in order to get minutes under their belts. They are exciting talents for Liverpool to have acquired but in the short term, they are unlikely to help the club clear that final hurdle and deliver a first Premier League title.

By contrast, City have once again identified gaps in their squad that need filling and splashed the cash to get int the players that they require. Cover and an eventual replacement for Fernandinho who will be 35 by the end of the season was key for City in this summer and they closed a record deal for Atletico Madrid's Rodri almost as soon as the window opened.

For me, Liverpool lack genuine creativity in their central midfield positions. Wijnaldum and Henderson are willing workers but neither has an eye for that killer pass. Meanwhile, Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain can drive at the opposition and are particularly attempt in broken play but they usually lack that little bit of craft against highly organised defences that take away the space they operate best in.

I believe that Jurgen Klopp agrees with this assessment and it is why Liverpool were giving serious consideration to signing a player like Nabil Fekir this time last year even though they had already spent big money on the likes of Keita, Fabinho and Shaqiri. Fekir has since joined Real Betis in a deal that will hopefully allow Spurs to sign Lo Celso while to date Liverpool appear not to have made any moves for a similar style player in the window. Again, you can criticise City for essentially buying their titles but you have to admire the fact that they act without hesitation to improve their squad year in year out, something that Liverpool don't appear to have done thus far.

Going back then to the original theme of this post, Liverpool are also disadvantaged by the amount of playing time that their squad has had to endure over the past year. Having a smaller squad or at least having less genuine first-team options means that on average a Liverpool player was required to play the equivalent of 4-5 extra league matches last year in comparison to City

Top 5 EPL minutes played for both sides. The difference between the likes of Sterling and Salah or Walker and Robertson is clear

The gruelling season that the Liverpool squad endured was only extended by the tournaments held this summer in Africa and South America. Saido Mane, for example, played 55 games for club and country between 12th August 2018 (the start of the EPL) and the AFCON final on 19th July for a total playing time 4789 mins. In the same period, Mo Salah amassed 56 appearances for club and country and was on the pitch for a total of 4703 mins.

Mane and Mahrez both endured marathon seasons but squad rotation allowed Mahrez greater opportunity to rest

Man City too have had some players who have had long years, in particular, Riyadh Mahrez whose Algeria side beat Mane's Senegal in the AFCON final. However, Mahrez played just 3194 minutes over that 342 day period, a full 26 hours or the best part of 18 games less than Mane. A similar stat exists for Sergio Aguero who was a key part of Argentina's 3rd place finish at the Coppa America yet still played significantly fewer minutes for club and country than Salah.

All of the above suggests that a Liverpool squad that has not added any reinforcements will be severely stretched next year by a City team that enjoys cranking up the pressure on the opposition both on and off the pitch. Jurgen Klopp wants his sides playing a brand of high-octane football or as he famously called it "heavy metal" football. My concern would be that their demanding workload may leave Liverpool sounding more like the Black Eyed Peas than Black Sabbath.

Sort:

Surely Chamberlain's knee will not hold out. It is well documented that players rarely get back to peak performance after ligament damage. I doubt he will play more than 15 matches.

Also, with VAR they willl probably lose a quarter of their goal tally that they were able to pick up via offside goals and Mo Salah diving in the penalty box.

I doubt they even crack 90 points this season.

It's a fairly damming statistic that the guy has only managed more than 30 PL appearances in a season once in his career!

Haha, that's what I like to see, some banter between football supporters

You guys probably need to worry about cracking 70 before you worry about us cracking 90. Ole's at the wheel and he's driving off a cliff I reckon!

We are trash thanks to Woodward and the owners.

Today I just witnessed dead wood phil jones attempt a Balesque bicycle kick which went from his foot to his raised hand for a hand ball.

How many people handle the ball from a bicycle kick?

We might salvage the season if we get Bruno, Maguire and Dybala comes in for the trampoline that is Lukaku. At least he will not do any damage to the Juventus title win.

Haha, yeah I saw that. My housemate is a Manchester United supporter so I've watched most of your pre-season, too.

How Jones is still at the club is baffling!

Wowwww that first photo!!!

Lets not forget that In football anything can happen!!

So Sheffield United to win the league then?

Just like Leicester City did a few years ago right?

I wont be 100% sure about that. Following the way they played last season, taking everyone by surprise.

Funny Views OF LIVE pool

Tend to agree with you. Not that Liverpool will dip but looking at Man City lately and this new guy Rhoderi is the real deal and he looks like he has taken De Bruyne off the leash and he is back in the good books. On Liverpools and Phil's side. The Ox is back, Salah actually didn't have a great season last year by his standards, he was poor in alot of gamesand there are a few youngsters on their pre season that raised an eyebrow or two. City will put everything into the champions league this year also where the pool will go for the league.

From what I understand, De Bruyne has looked very good in pre-season and is why he should be in everyone's fantasy team at the very reasonable price of 9.5million. Up until his injury he was the most complete midfielder in the league

I think there are several reasons Salah struggled last year and a couple are related to the above. Firstly fatigue, again he played a lot of football in 2017/18 both in the EPL and with Liverpool going to the CL final. He was then injured in that final but still went to the World Cup with Eygpt only half fit. It just seemed like he lacked a bit of sharpness last year.

Secondly, I think Liverpool sometimes lack a plan B against sides that just drop deep and defend their penalty area. Salah and the whole Liverpool front line is lethal if you give them space in behind or allow them to win the ball in midfield and transistion quickly into attack. It's a bit different when they've got 8 or 9 bodies to play through and I think that's another reason why they'd be wise to invest in a creative midfielder that could pick out those key passes for the likes of Mane and Salah

Love posts like this. We tend to do better when people are doubting us so you've just given me a big slice of confidence sir!

Haha, the siege mentality! It worked well for Mourinho. Perhaps you can forward this blog onto Jurgen and he can print it out and stick it on the dressing room wall? Thank me at the end of the season .....

He can hang it up next to the Champions League trophy you guys almost won!

Oh it’s like that is it ;-)

No hate ;) Genuinely, though, Spurs are the only team we compete with in the top 6 that I don't loathe.

I think the truth is that Liverpool is the cash cow for the Red Sox and just maybe they don't have the funds that they should have. I am sure they will have one or to new faces coming and expect them to be close to City and maybe winning it again. Klopp is a different animal and he seems to get the best out of every player.

I just don't think anyone is prepared to sink as much money into the club as the City owners. Liverpool spent a lot last year (net spend £130mil) that was never likely to happen again but maybe they just need that one signing to add a bit of variety and freshness to the squad - it could still happen.....

Thankfully, that's not the case. The owners never take a penny out of the accounts. Revenues are increasing on a yearly basis and they're delivering what they promised. One of the issues we have is that we have invested £50M into a new training centre that will be ready next summer. The club is also paying for plans for the second stage of Anfield's development which should see a significant capacity increase at the Anfield Road End. We also just gave a lot of our stars new bumper contracts so we'll only spend if somebody Jurgen REALLY wants comes along.

I agree, the title is Man City's to lose but if they focus on the Champion's League, who knows? Would like to see Mane rested and Wijnaldum play in his position and maybe give Ox more opportunities.

I think City have the resources to compete in and win pretty much everything, they showed as much last year by doing the domestic treble, they also cruised through the group stage of the CL and destroyed Schalke in the 2nd round. I don't think it was lack of resources or focus that cost them the Champions League, they just didn't play particularly well over the 2 legs v Spurs. In a way they remind me a little of the 1990s United team that were totally dominant in England but struggled to find the right tactics for Europe until they finally it in 99.

I agree with your assessment, but this is the beauty of the game, new players can beat the old one, and you can expect and ups and downs in the game. You have opened many angles to think about though. Wonderful post, enjoyed every word of it. Thanks.
