Travel Super Foods #2: Jack Fruit in Laos!

in #food7 years ago

Since arriving to the town of Luang Prabang in northern Laos I've found some great vendors at the morning market selling jack fruit. It comes in a giant green pod that can weigh up to 80 pounds! They cut out the fleshy yellow pieces that you eat. The fruit has a meaty texture and it's a very high quality carbohydrate super food rich in all sorts of vitamins and minerals. Juicy Fruit Gum was actually flavored after Jack Fruit. So it's like a less sweet "Juicy Fruit" flavor.

Jack fruit is a favorite of mine and is commonly found all over Asia, especially in Tropical South East Asia. This pack here cost me 10,000 kip, about $1.20 US. It's plenty for one person. I like to snack on it throughout the day. When you open up the piece of fruit there is a big seed inside. These seeds can be roasted and eaten as well, but are usually tossed aside.

Jack fruit is certainly a super food. It's anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory. It's loaded with vitamin A which is good for your eyes. It's a good source of fiber and improves digestions. It has electrolytes and helps balance your blood pressure. It's high in Potassium, Vitamin A, C, E, K, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Pantothenic acid, Copper, Manganese and Magnesium! It's rich in iron and helps reverse anemia. It's even been known to heal ulcers. All this in the palm of my hand! What a great Super Food! Until next time. -Dan "World Travel Pro!"

Haha, Yes indeed. I love'em!

great! and so informative...love your reports!! Wish we had this fruit in the States.

Thanks for your comments @kayderross! You can actually get it at the Asian Market in Albany on Central ave. But it will probably cost you 5 dollars or more for the same amount and may be old and mushy. Would be nice to see it in every grocery for a dollar back home. It's really delicious, it's my all time favorite fruit!

I love those, we had it in our great grandma backyard.

Yes, you're from Burma. That must be cool owning your own Jack Fruit Tree. all the Jack Fruit you can eat! I love SE Asia. You are from a totally awesome part of the world!
