TacoCat's TrEats #16: Dinner at the MUJI Café! 🍱

in #food6 years ago (edited)

Hey Steemit!

So I've actually been applying for jobs recently, and I got selected for 2 rounds of interviews at MUJI! So exciting! If I get the job I'll probably be moving to Japan but we'll see. I dont want to get my hopes too high.

If you've never heard of MUJI before, it's a Japanese retail company which sells a wide variety of household and consumer goods (or lifestyle goods). MUJI is distinguished by its design minimalism, emphasis on recycling, avoidance of waste in production and packaging, and no-logo or "no-brand" policy.

Anyway, in doing my research for the interviews I decided to try out their food at the café in their flagship store here in Singapore!

MUJI's SG flagship store is located in Plaza Singapura and is actually very big. It's also where MUJI displays their latest or up and coming designs, There's also a space called Open MUJI, with educational activities such as exhibition gallery, creative workshops and hosting of talks can take place. It really increases customer interaction and teaches people about lifestyle, culture, art or design.

The café is technically called Café&Meal MUJI and you can see their menu here. They serve quite a wide variety of stuff; from typical café fare like coffee/beverages and desserts to set meals like Cheese Baked Butter Curry Chicken Rice (maybe they're trying to localise? But it's pretty pricey though).

I think their most popular set is actually the Deli set, where you can choose a number of dishes from what they have available. Their dishes are made of different seasonal, natural ingredients for a nutritionally well-balanced, healthy meal of your own choice. I like that it's very customisable, just like a normal mixed vegetable (or cai png) stall in our hawker centres. Maybe that's where they got the idea from?

So in each of the deli sets (excluding the breakfast set), you can get a cold dish, a hot dish, a carbohydrate (rice/bread), and a soup. They also have a variety of different hot and cold dishes for you to choose from as well. They do have a seasonal menu (you can see the Autumn menu on the right) but it's slightly more expensive.

We ended up ordering a 2 deli set to share since we weren't that hungry at the time. The set we chose came with 1 cold dish, 1 hot dish, their special 16 grain rice, an onsen egg and miso soup.

For the dishes, we chose Fried Chicken Sweet Chili Mayonnaise for the hot dish and Smoked Duck and Honey Sesame Duo Sweet Potato Salad for the cold dish. I'm actually not a fan of cold food so I really wanted an option to change the cold dish to a hot one but alas there wasn't one. Oh well. The duck was actually really good even though it was cold.

We saw quite a few people eating there for dinner even on a Monday (most of the dishes were actually almost gone!). Even though it's a little pricey for me I think it's quite an affordable price given the quality and the location.

I actually didn't even know it was a proper restaurant because I thought it was just a café and I was pleasantly surprised to find the food being pretty good! Of course I still prefer my hawker food (cheap and good 😋) but if you wanna eat healthy and you're in the area, I think MUJI offers quite an affordable option considering it's in town.

Thanks for reading!
