I think that every Dutchman on our planet knows what a Frikandel Speciaal is. It's a kind of filled meat roll, but, differently. You eat him hot, with a cold filling.

What is a Frikandel

Frikandellen are made of pork, chicken meat, a little horse meat, pane flour and artificial flavors. The fairy tale is that there are also cows-eyes and udders in the Frikandellen, but that does not seem to be true. The Frikandel is not a protected name. The inventor of the meat bar, Gerrit de Vries from Dordrecht, has forgotten to do that. That's why you might find so many Frikandellen in the Netherlands because everybody makes his own variant.

How do you make Frikandel Speciaal?

You buy the Frikandel in the store, you then deepfry it. You cut the Frikandel open and fill the him with shredded onion, curry and mayonnaise. That's all. I love Frikandelen Speciaal, I grew up with them. The snack bar was around the corner and I was glad to go there and buy me some. You usually have enough of two Frikandellen because they are real calorie bombs.
