In Which I Confound Wait Staff with My Allergies

in #food7 years ago (edited)

Because of my allergies, I sometimes confound wait staff with my meal requests. An example was my request for sushi rolls without rice. Rice is not my friend, and the waitress simply couldn’t follow. “No rice?” she asked.

“I can’t eat rice. Can you make it with cucumbers instead?”

“Sushi with no. . . rice.”

“That’s right.”

“You can’t eat rice?”

“I know. It’s sad.”

She stood there staring at me before checking with the chef. He was totally fine with making my sushi rice and gluten-free.

“No soy sauce?”

“Nope.”

It all worked out. Unlike at lunch today, I was not poisoned.

The sushi was delicious. I left unscathed even if my waitress did keep staring at me awkwardly. Maybe she thought I was pranking her?

Despite best efforts, Outback managed to smuggle a piece of red onion into my salad. I got the juice of it on my tongue which immediately swelled up, along with my throat and my ear. I sent the dish back and ordered one that shouldn’t even be stocked near red onions.

Eating out is tricky business.

Outback didn't charge for my new meal. In fact, our whole tab was waived and we were given a $20 gift card. Turns out it expired last month. Perhaps they'll still honor it? I'm guessing I won't feel like going back there for a very long time. For now, I'm just happy to be at home in bed typing away and reading some posts from new and old Steemit favorites.

Happy Saturday!

Well it certainly is not common at all to eat sushit without rice but it still looks delicious!

It was really great. I wish I'd thought to bring my Tamari soy sauce. That would have been perfect. Next time!

Allergies are no fun, but meal looks delicious!

It was lovely!

My dairy allergy isn't exactly uncommon, and yet people can't seem to grasp that eggs are not dairy, while cheese and butter are. For something less common like a rice allergy, you have my sympathy.

Oh dear. That is just ugh. I blame the food pyramid.

The food pyramid can be blamed for a lot of things, I think. The carb-heavy diet it endorses is suspect, for example.

What about sashimi? that's just the pieces of fish

I love sashimi, but I also wanted the avocado, cucumber and spicy sauce. Next time i may order only sashimi.

I don't know what to say. But I enjoyed reading the post.

Thank you for doing so!

aww. I really love sushi, and most japanese food. In my country, not being able to eat rice is gonna be a big problem since most food here are rice-base. It's great that they went through with your request! ^^ Good thing you came out safe and sound!

I loved that the chef was up for the challenge. It was a great relief to me to eat safely.

I am allergic to rice and onion and soy and gluten too!!! I can't even smell onions anymore without getting hives. :( So frustrating! Did you end up having to take something for the onion exposure?

I was alright, but had a terrible headache and hives in my mouth. My tongue started to swell up the first time. Fortunately they were teeny, tiny pieces that I didn't actually bite into. As you can imagine, I am always combing my food for allergens. By the end of the day, it felt like I was running a scam because of all the free meals. I would rather have paid and eaten safely/not been sick all evening. For me, too, it's only red onions, but even one whiff and anaphylaxis begins. I should really get an epi-pen. It's just that they are $400.
