RE: Dumpster Diving Diary #11 ✔ | One Man's Trash Another Man's Treasure!

in #food7 years ago

Do you ever get hassled by the store/cops? One cop made us put our newfound treasures back in the dumpster after a store employee saw us. I know it creates a legal liability for them, but I thought that trash was fair game as soon as it hit the curb?

It seems like a lot of stores do things like pour bleach on their trash to discourage dumpster diving, at least in my limited experience. Also, it's getting harder to find actual dumpsters behind grocery stores instead of big trash compactors now. Sad, because there's a lot of hungry people out there.

Yeah the trash compactors are a big problem here as well but one might always try to talk to the store owners about helping them take care of their food and some times they agree. The bleach thing I think is very uncommon at least here in Sweden and is used as a story to scare people off.

Encountered police and workers on many occasions and I just explain what I'm doing and show the food and they are shocked on the perfect quality of the food that is being thrown away. No problem at all, what's morally right, to throw away the food or save it!? ;)

The local bakeries around here donate their day-old baked goods to shelters, but the big chain grocery stores seem to be much more uptight about people poking around their trash. Again, I'm sure it's probably their legal team that's preventing them from adopting a more progressive attitude. :)
