There is nothing more important than this ๐ฑ
My family & I acquired the land you can see here a few days ago with the intention of turning it into a fruit & vegetable garden. We have never done this before but with the help of YouTube and this awesome community we will be munching on our home grown produce by the end of the year.
After studying a bunch of earth catastrophe theories toward the end of last year I have concluded there is nothing more important at this time than to start growing our own food, regardless of how the future turns out. Aside from potential pole shifts, solar flashes, ice ages, the loss of modern agriculture, worldwide economic collapse and total social upheaval there are plenty of other reasons to acquire the oldest and most important skill us humans have ever mastered. The first of which should be our personal health and the health of the land upon which we grow, because so much of our food today is produced in a way which does more harm than good.
And why pay a fortune for organic when all you need is some land and some seeds?
Today my kids and I stomped around our little bit of earth, letting her know what was coming.
She gets the sun all day long and I love how we can see a snow covered mountain off in the distance.
We have a friend with a rotavator who has offered to help us out because the soil is currently very compacted.
We also have a compost bin which I am so happy to see!
Complete with some ancient compost.
There is a canal system running around the outside of the land, making the watering simple enough. The water runs all year from the mountain.
We also by chance found this cool place for the kids to play close to the garden when they get bored of watching us do our thing.
Just beyond this is the agricultural valley we look down upon from our home.
And our home is just a 5 min walk from our new project.
The peach trees are currently exploding with blossom in the valley.
My goal is to be growing or sourcing locally 100% of the food for my family & I by 2023.
I intend also to grow excess food which will be given away to others who are less fortunate.
Does anyone happen to know of a food growing group on steem, whaleshares or discord?

Hi @amico!
Did you know Steem Basic Income has a Quality Policy?
Amazing new direction for your life and family. This is the dream.
May I suggest you get those easy to grow veggies in right away? They will continue to provide for years. Asparagus, chard, kale, arugula, stawberries. All the fruit trees and berry bushes will help in later years, so the earlier you decide to plant many of them the better. They can be spendy if purchased from a garden store or ordered online. Maybe local people will offer cuttings and roots you can divide.
Do you ever look into gardening clubs? Water and Soil usually has a volunteer team too, possibly giving away native bushes and trees. Great way to make new friends and neighbors, who might offer to help you out in many ways. Find out what people in your area need (compost, animal feed, honey), and you can become a success.
Lots of great stuff there! Thank you.
I am a total beginner so all advice is very welcome. I will look into local clubs and feel sure I should be able to find cuttings for those fruit trees and berry bushes without too much trouble. There are many farmers in this area. Just wish my french was a bit better!
We are heading to an association tomorrow who give away all the seeds for free, as long as we replace them at the end of the year with our own seeds. Seems like a great idea!
Now to get our rotavator friend here asap. Until that is done we are a bit stuck.
Feeling super excited about all this :)
That's awesome. Be sure to share the obstacles and your victories on the blockchain with us.
You can be sure of that! The last two and a half years of my life is pretty well documented here ;)
Amazing it looks great a fantastic decision there. Can't wait until the universe gives me some land. It'll come! By then I'll have seen yours grow and have some great tips. You have the house as well? It's a stunning spot ๐ฏ๐
We got lucky with the land. It belongs to some weed smoking hippie neighbours of ours who can't be bothered to do anything with it. They told us we can use it if we give some of the produce to them, which seems like a great deal to me. We also found an old couple who don't use their allotment any more, so we even have a second plot if things expand enough. In the end it came down to being very vocal about our desire. Shout loud enough and someone usually hears!
The house in the images isn't ours but does however belong to the man who is looking after my english cat for me till we are living in a more appropriate house for cats! So, am super happy I will be seeing my cat every day again :)
You should check out #homesteading
Perfect! Had forgotten this tag till now and it's great to see lots of activity there.
