Food Fridays #7: Ramen Zetton In Costa Mesa, CA

Food Fridays #7

After last week's awesome ramen at Yamadaya Ramen I was now free to pursue some other ramen shops. I decided to try another place just down the street from Yamadaya called Ramen Zatton. I had been there with my wife many years ago, but it wasn't anything special so I never went back. Since it was still in business I thought I'd give it another try and I'm glad I did.

Ramen Zetton specializes in shoyu and shio ramen, but they also serve a miso tsukemen. The latter sounded good as it was also loaded with garlic. So after a quick glance over the menu and a look at the leaderboard on the wall, tsukemen it was! I forgoed the beer and opted for a large glass of green tea this time, just felt like some tea this time.

When I ordered I added egg topping and charshu of course. I might have overdone it this time this time though. The tuskemen came out with a lot of minced pork already in it. Hard to believe, but it was almost too much pork! Now the charshu was perfect, fatty, very lightly sweetened and thick, almost like kakuni, but not as thick. It was actually some of the best charshu I've tasted in a while. The eggs were cooked just right and had a light flavor. The noodles were the curly type found in most ramen and just normal. The soup was very thick and tasted great. It didn't have a strong flavor, but just right with a good miso flavor that was hard to pin down. The soup was fairly well rounded, with no one flavor cancelling the other out, the way a good ramen should taste. There was also some goma, sesame seeds witch gave the ramen a bit of a nutty flavor.

There were also some condiments at the table to spice things up. When I saw the habanero miso I thought best to avoid the pain. Sorry, I'm a chicken when it comes to spicy foods.

Ramen Zetton Ranking

  • Soup - 🍜🍜🍜🍜
  • Men - 🍜🍜🍜
  • Charshu - 🍜🍜🍜🍜
  • Nitamago - 🍜🍜🍜🍜

Overall I was pleasantly surprised with the ramen. My faint memories from last time I had been here the ramen just wasn't that good. I'm not sure if they changed the recipe or my palette changed, but I'd now recommend Zetton if you are in the area.

Lucky to eat ramen out of Japan in foreign country!⭐️⭐️⭐️

Only if it's good!

I am concerned about putting Habanero Miso! Looks delicious!

でしょー。。、でもおいしそう。

I can never get tired of ramen. In Toronto, we have tons of ramen places. Over the years, I had tried almost all of them and I am constantly on the look for new spots popping up in the city. Love your ramen posts and I can relate to trying new ramen places. Looks like in CA, you have tons of good ramen spots!

I just saw your ramen post too. One challenge is getting the ingredients correct. Even though pork is a pig, the flavor depends on how it is raised and prepared. Same goes with the other ingredients.

Costa Mesa has always had a strong Japanese community. Tons of authentic Japanese restaurants. The ramen trend really picked around 2011 and now there are tons of ramen places within a 10 mile radius. I need to venture out of my tonkotsu safety bubble though for some good shoyu or shio ramen. Maybe next time.
