Friday 07/07/17
Here is when i entered the veg market , it is like 10 Minutes drive from my place! It was quite crowdy and very noisy! This atmosphere is just magical!

The varieties is just amazing! There is something for everyone for sure!!! You can notice on the picture : Lady fingers/Zuchinni/Gourd/Carrots/Beans /eggplant and the brown one is a root veg which we use in cooking curries and beignet. It is called 'Arouille'.

IMG_2813.jpg

Next stop was at the most famous vegetable on the Mauritian gastronomy : Pomme d'amour is what we call it here! It is like small tomatoes but not as sweet! Mauritian uses it a lot, the price varies! You can get it less than a dollar for 500gms when in season and if ever the weather has been bad the price can go up to 6 dollars!

This is the Asian corner, where you get fresh chinese noodles, sprouts, green leaves, chives, sauces, etc... All that will go in the preparation of a fried noodles!!!

IMG_2794.jpg

Spices is the main part of Mauritian cuisine! You can find all the different mix here! Curcuma, curry powder, cinnamon power, cumin, name it and they have it all!

IMG_2808.jpg

Here we are next to the chili stall! This is a special chili, we call it 'piment carry' and I personally love to make beignet with them. They are a little bit spicy and can be very big sometime!

IMG_2818.jpg

Well well well, this is the local 'Olives' which is in season actually! We call it olives but has nothing to do with real olives! This one is super sour! The best way to eat them is to pickle them!

IMG_2786.jpg

One of my favorite roots vegetables ... Tapioca!!! We call it 'Manioc' in Mauritius! Have you ever tasted fresh tapioca?

IMG_2798.jpg

Do you know this one? Called 'pipengailles' by the local and has the name of 'Sponge Gourd' in English! It's skin is quite rough and we make chutneys with it!

IMG_2816.jpg

Fresh coconut!!! What else!

IMG_2801.jpg

Potatoes!! In Mauritius we have 1 or 2 varieties of potatoes only unlike other countries! Sad!!!

I bet most of you will not know this one! It is called Arrowroot! Boil it and eat with melted butter, just amazing!

The famous bittergourd! This is one of the rare vegetables that i don't particularly appreciate but apparently it is very good for health!!!

Next local vegetable is one called 'Patole' or ash gourd in English! This vegetable is quite bland in taste but still very much appreciated by everyone!

IMG_2817.jpg

To end up I took some fresh curcuma which is a magical spice! In the cold weather, just infuse it with milk , it keeps you fit!!!

I spent like 2 hours walking through the whole market and it was as usual a great experience! In Mauritian veg market, you do get some people selling clothes and other stuffs around! Mauritius is beautiful!!!

This looks amazing! I wouldn't even know what to buy first. I love going to farmer's markets with the largest I've ever experienced being in San Francisco. How could you do anything but make healthy fresh foods with options like that? Thanks for taking us along on your experience.

Oh the one in San Francisco was be huge compared to the one we have in Mauritius though! I just get a great pleasure and it's a way to resource myself when i go to farmer's market! It is just magical!
Thanks for checking it out!

wow! lots there i don't recognise, thanks for sharing the pictures :)

Thanks for the support dear!

The only thing closely relative to a market like this is our local farmer's market and it's not nearly as busy or has so much selection! That bittergourd looks pretty nasty! LOL I might have a hard time figuring out a recipe to use it for but I'm pretty adventurous when it comes to food. I'll try just about any dish at least once! :)

Ah the bittegourd! It looks like a crocodile infact! The bitterness in it makes me avoid it! Some people just make juice with it and drink it raw! That will be hard for me indeed!

I bet it would be a pretty good compliment to a healthy smoothie though! I've been known to throw in sweet with bitter, practically accidental to find complimenting flavors.

That sounds interesting! Actually with some wild baobab honey , it can be a perfect healthy smoothie!

If you decide to try it I hope you create a recipe and review.

Let me gather the courage to try it first! That gonna be hard!

HAHA! Yeah, I might need some courage to try and throw that in my blender too.

Tried hard to get the courage during the night, but still the heart say 'NO'!!!LOL!

Nice post! The market looks very similar to the markets here in Cambodia. Never have seen or used arrowroot though! Will look for it.

Thanks for stopping by dear! Always a pleasure to have you checking my post! What is great also is that the arrowroot does not contain gluten! I hope you do find it and try it out!
