A Japanese-Inspired Brunch on a Lazy Sunday...Sandwich, Pie, Cake - The Makings of a Perfect Meal!

in #food6 years ago (edited)

An obsession with all things Japanese led me to visit a very famous patisserie-turned-brunch spot called Black Star Pastry on a beautiful Sunday morning in Sydney.

Keen readers will remember that when I went to the Sydney Night Noodle Markets recently (see blog post here), Black Star Pastry made an appearance with a pop-up store selling their famous strawberry, watermelon cake but today we were here for their Japanese-inspired menu items.

Occasionally they do weekend specials for a limited time only and I was dying to take my sister as we both love trying any sort of Asian-inspired meals. I suppose that's stemmed from the fact that whilst born in Australia we still treasure our Asian heritage and particularly Asian food so we're a bit 'Asian-inspired' ourselves!

Choices, choices, choices...what to eat?

Anyway, I noticed today that Black Star has started to branch out into offering savoury foods such as these roast meat plates:

They're most famous for their sweet treats and here are a couple of their cakes, croissants and custard tarts (my favourite!):

Made our choices (finally!)

...once we had thoroughly whet our appetite we were ready to order and we started off with the Eggplant Katsu Burger

This was actually the best meal of the day, surprisingly! It didn't look like much but the eggplant was moist, beautiful crunchy crumb and complimented with fresh cabbage and kewpie mayo.

Next up was the Chicken Katsu Curry Pie. Anyone who has eaten Japanese curry will know the taste, it's not as "curry"-like as Indian curries, more mild and contains mostly potatoes, sweet potatoes and/or meat like chicken or pork. The pie had beautiful, flaky pastry and also the additional crunch of katsu crumbs. It was served with Japanese pickled radishes and kewpie mayo (of course!)

Last course was the Japanese Forest Cake

This cake is made with layers of hojicha sponge cake, choya confit ume fruits in umeshu infused cream and garnished with matcha moss leaves, bark of dark chocolate and confit whole ume.

The cake was very moist, each layer you could taste each of the unique flavours described above without being overpowering. It was a very subtle, delicate cake.

Conclusion

Safe to say this was a delicious brunch meal and one that I would definitely eat again. I love variety and really enjoyed starting off with the burger, moving onto the flaky pie and finishing with a beautifully light and interesting tasting cake. I have to say that Japanese cuisine is probably one of my favourites and something I could solely live on if I needed to!

Let me know what you guys think and which dishes/items you would have chosen :)

Until next time...

Thank you @rxtro !! It’s my pleasure, food is my passion :)

Wow the pastries really looks to die for!

Haha yes they’re always so tempting but I had to stay focussed on my mission...to try the Japanese inspired menu! I usually prefer my pastries from another patisserie but the ones here are pretty good too.

That Japanese forest cake looks amazing. You lured me in with that picture and I don't regret it. It sounds so delicious and looks so pretty. Good choices for your meal all around I think, but the cake takes the cake, at least for the post reader haha. Great posf

Hello friend! Sorry for the late reply, I've been running on little sleep with Xmas!!

Haha I'm glad the cake was as tempting as it was delicious. It really was a really delicate but extremely well balanced cake to eat. The guy behind all these cakes is an absolute genius.

Love the pun on cake takin the cake ;) thanks for your support @topkpop !! :)
