Homemade POPCORNS! ~ Grown from seed

in #food7 years ago (edited)

Hello my dear Steemians,

today I would like to share a story about our home-grown popcorns with You!

It all started here in our garden (mine and my boyfriend's @crokangaroo).
~ He is new here on Steemit so check out his #introduceyourself post!

In the photo above our popcorn plants can be located as the row on the utmost right. 🌱
This image was taken in late spring, when they were still so young.

We like to practice polyculture based on permacultural principles in our garden so here You can see the diversity of vegetables that were grown next to them.

I believe that meditating with plants can help them grow, making them stronger and healthier. These popcorns were planted in poor clayey soil which means that their root needed to be strong. On the photo above You can see me while meditating on rooting and growing of these popcorn plants.

They were growing so fast which was great because they were planted a bit too late...
You can see how the cob of corn has grown on the plant and one bundle of collected cobs next to it. The cob bundles were put on the attic for few months to dry so they can pop :D

Now they are all dried up and ready to be popped :)
Next step is to take off kernels from the cobs...

I enjoy doing it because I find it very calming and relaxing :)

One done, one more to go :)

Now we have enough kernels, so we're ready for making of popcorns! :)
I make them with coconut oil and Himalayan salt.

Put the coconut oil in the stewpan with handles and turn on the stove (the best is to use gas stove, but if You don't have one, electrical is ok too...)

Put the kerners of corns in the stewpan too. Put them in so they cover the bottom of it.

I put the salt in it before they are made so it sticks better to the popcorns.

Later, when the popcorns are done, You can add a bit more of the salt if needed.

Now it's time to make them! Cover the stewpan and wait while they start popping. I advise to prepare the kitchen rag as You will need to shake the stewpan so they don't stick to the bottom and the handles can be pretty hot...

Here You can hear the Popcorns Popping.
If You know how to directly upload audio to the post, please leave a comment :)

When they start popping really fast like at the end of the audio, shake them few times, repeat with pauses and shaking. When they start popping really really fast turn down the intensity of the (gas) stove. Regulate it by need.

Tadaaam! The popcorns are done! Here's a pic of me with fresh homemade popcorns. I was visiting my friend @voodoolizard and she's always happy when I make them :) It bacame a tradition already :D

I hope You enjoyed the post!

Much love,
Petra @oceansoul13

Popcorn is such fun to grow in a garden. I like crops that don't have to be preserved in a special way, like canning or freezing. Popcorn is easy to keep, for sure! Your garden and the popcorn plants look great. Have a great gardening season in 2017!

Hi @haphazard-hstead ! Thank You for Your comment! Yes, popcorns are great and easy to preserve. Our garden has so much Sun hours, which is great, but some plants could use more shade...corns are perfect plants to provide that :D Oh, looking forward to this season, follow me for more stories, I followed You for Yours! Enjoy!

Mmmm! Love popcorn ! When i move to my country property I will grow some ! Thanks for shareing !👌👍

Yeah, popcorns are great! Thank You tor Your comment!
