Mama's budget beater #1 - Cottage Pie or Shepherd's Pie?
Her favourite comfort food is Cottage Pie, Shepherd's Pie, or whatever you may call it in your country!
What lies hidden beneath the creamy mashed potatoes?
The name Cottage Pie apparently originated in 1791 when potatoes were introduced as an edible crop for the poor.

We certainly can't call it food for the poor any longer with the price of potatoes these days!
Back in those days, leftover meat and vegetables were used as a filling, and of course topped with mashed potatoes.
The people lived in cottages, hence the name cottage pie :)
This became Shepherd's Pie around 1854 in the United Kingdom when lamb was used as a filling, according to wikipedia.
Nowadays, in South Africa, we mostly use ground beef and vegetables to make Cottage Pie.
Ingredients required for 5 servings- Total cost ZAR 70,00:
500g ground Beef
1 Onion
1 large Carrot
Small punnet chopped mixed Mushrooms (optional)
Brown Onion Soup Powder
4 large Potatoes
Milk & Butter
Method
Sautee diced Onions in a little oil.
Add ground beef and brown.
Add diced Mushrooms and coarsely grated Carrot and sautee.
Note - you can add any vegetable of your choice at this stage.
Add enough warm water to just cover meat, thicken with Brown Onion Soup Powder (or any other flavour you fancy) and cook for about 15 minutes, spoon into an oven dish.
Boil potatoes in salted water till soft, drain water off.
Add milk and a generous amount of butter and mash till creamy, add your favourite seasoning.
Pile on top of meat filling.
Smooth mash to cover meat and dot with butter.
Score with a fork to make a pretty pattern.
Place under grill to brown the topping.
Delicious home-cooked Cottage Pie with fresh green vegetables served as accompaniment.
Note - Cottage Pie freezes very well, so you can always double up the recipe and freeze one in a foil container for another day.
You can also make a spicy ground beef filling if you want a change of flavours.
Mama often makes a fish cottage pie as well as a chicken one, will show you how-to one of these days.
See you soon for budget beater #2 - Lentil Moussaka.
