Saturday lunch - Indian fish curry with rice. A simple experiment that turned out well!

in #food6 years ago

Lunch time and today wife assigned the responsibility of preparing food to me. I am not a bad cook but creativity with food is not my forte. So i decided to keep it simple. Looked through the fridge and realised we had a lot of frozen fish. So i decided to make indian fish curry for lunch. Now in india there is no such thing as indian fish curry. However, given the spices i used, it would definitely be a dish made in some part of india, most likely at a dhaba, a roadside eatery/restaurant found all over india.

It did turn out well. So i thought i will share the recipe here. Apologies but i couldnt take photos all the way but the final outcome is worth sharing. :)

Ingredients for fish curry -

  1. Fish, duh ( preferably fresh, i used frozen. Skinless and boneless. I used tuna)
  2. 2 tomatoes, chopped
  3. Tumeric 1 tsp
  4. Red chilli powder, 1 tsp
  5. Coriander powder, 1.5 tsp
  6. Salt to taste
  7. Mustard seeds, 0.5 tsp
  8. Fenugreek and cumin seeds, 0.5 tsp each
  9. Oil, 4 tbsp
  10. Ginger and garlic paste, 1 tbsp

First i defrosted the fish. Then marinated it with tumeric and ginger garlic paste. Then left it aside while i prepared the curry.

Next step involves chopping the tomatoes because its difficult to find 2 chopped tomatoes as i have mentioned in the ingredients. Heat oil in a pan. Put the ginger garlic paste and mustard seeds, cumin and fenugreek seeds. Saute for about 2 minutes on medium heat. Add tomatoes, coriander powder, tumeric, red chilli powder and salt, and let is saute for 5 to 7 minutes.

While tomatoes are being, sauted, in a separate pan, put some oil and shallow fry the fish. Let is cook half way and then flip it to the other side. Once fully cooked, turn off the heat.

The tomatoes would have become soft by now. Add a little water, 1/4 cup to the pan with tomatoes and let the water boil. Stir it a little and add the fish to this. Cover with lid and leave it on medium heat for 5 minutes. If the water starts to dry up, add a little more.

That's it. Curry is ready and this is what it looked like -

And trust me, it tasted amazing and i genuinely surprised myself.

I am having it with rice but feel free to have it with a healthier grain. The taste is all in the curry. Do try it and let me know what you think.

I had fish when in India. Not fish curry. But I'm surprised they don't cook that, b/c of all the varieties of curry for just about everything.

Fish curry is also quite common in india, specially south india and states that have a coastline. North india predominantly eats fried fish. Perhaps, you went to northern part of india.

I come from a town near delhi and never had fish curry growing up. In fact the first time i had fish curry was in west bengal where i did my undergrad.

South india has a variety of fish curries, all really amazing.

Yes, the North. I was in Himashal Pradesh mainly, a month in Dharmashala.

I think you went to one of the most beautiful places in India. I have been there, for a couple of days though and a few areas nearby. Its just amazing.

Definitely beautiful and a nice place to live. Is that your favorite place in India?

I have actually never picked my favourite. Dharamshala is in a state called himachal pradesh and i was born in neighbouring uttarakhand. So i lived till my high school in a similar area. My favourite place in the mountains will be one of the states in north east but dharamshala would be definitely in top 5.
