Hong Kong: Day #2 Fanciest McDonalds in the World!

in #food6 years ago

It's my second day in Hong Kong and today's main attraction was the World's Fanciest Mcdonalds! I walked another 30,000+ steps and my legs are burning but I don't regret it in the least. It was only a few days ago that I happened to come across a buzzfeed video of someone trying the fanciest mcdonalds in the world, and coincidentally enough I happened to be less than a 15 minute subway away.

Getting McDonalds while traveling seems like a bit of a cop-out but I hope you guys can forgive me because it was such an unique and awesome experience. In the past couple years Mcdonalds has launched a new style of restaurants called McDonalds Next. While they've already spread to several countries, this particular location in Hong Kong (admiralty center) was the first. They're making the McDonalds experience gourmet by providing many more gourmet ingredients and the ability to create your own personalized burger via a touch screen menu.

The Mcdonalds itself is just a small little opening at some random entrance to the Admiralty Center Mall. From the outside, you'd probably never know that a new gourmet service awaits. There was just a single sign with specials and the iconic golden McDonalds arches to welcome you in.

As you walk in, there's a rope to handle the line, although we went just a little early and the line didn't start forming until after we finished. Once you enter, there are several rows of touch screen machines to customize your order. Like many of the touch screen machines I'v used before in Mcdonalds, you have all the normal choices but unlike the ones in Chengdu, you have several new ones as well like the Mcdonalds Cafe, the Mcdonalds bakery, and the most exciting of them all, the "Create your own"!

You get to choose between several types of buns including an artisan bakery bun, normal burger bun, and a vegetarian Lettuce bun. You then get to pick your meat which is a choice between an 100% angus patty, fried chicken patty or giant portobello. You get to choose between about 7-9 different sauces including Mcdonald's famous big mac sauce as well as a large array of toppings such as caramelized onions, jalapenos, grilled pineapple, apple smoked bacon, etc. When you're all finished, you finalize your order and bring the recipe to the cashier (or you can pay online at the machine if you have an appropriate payment method).

After paying, the lady gave me a number and told me my food would be delivered to my table! I couldn't believe they had table service and not only did they bring it to your table but it didn't cost anything extra!

The McDonald's was quite big packed with tables, side rooms and even bar style seats for people to eat.

On the way to the seating area you pass a huge ingredients bar where they actually piece the burgers together in front of you. The food bar is connected to a glass cabinet full of delicious baked items and followed by Mcdonald's own little cafe area selling not only artisan coffee's but their own coffee brand beans as well!

I sat down at a large booth and immediately noticed that there were 2 wireless charging spots perfect to lay down any of your compatable devices for a quick charge. In addition to the wireless chargers there were about 3 sets of usb ports on each side of the table to plug in your phone or whatever usb device you have.

After about 10 minutes the food finally came! I ordered a massive burger for only 50 hkd which arrived on an aesthetically pleasing cutting board instead of the normal black tray that most McDonald's provide. The burger itself was huge! Layered with an 100% angus patty, grilled pineapple, caramelized onions, lettuce, jalapenos, big mac sauce and a tomato jalapeno sauce. The bun outstanding! I could honestly just eat the artisan bun by itself let alone as a burger! The combination of grilled pineapple and tomato jalapeno sauce added a beautiful sweet bbq like flavor that melded together perfectly with the beef. For 50 hkd, this burger was really amazing and I would 100% buy it again.

a burger, fries and drink cost about x2 more than back in chengdu haha but it was pretty good

I've seen the same Buzzfeed video. I have to say, it's probably the only McDonalds I'd willingly go to. :)

I'm not a big fan of Mcdonalds in the states bc i think it's way too greasy (the wrapper is often soaked) but I like it a lot more in china and hk. The burgers aren't super greasy and I enjoy some of their asian styled burgers and desserts.
