Fit Thoughts

I've changed up my daily routine to make my workout a bit more efficient and effective. Until now I would typically do it at 9:30pm, after finishing the work day, eating dinner, and putting the kids to bed. Needless to say, energy and motivation were low, and by the time I got to the keyboard to write my daily entry, I was pretty exhausted.

Now I'm taking advantage of the 1-hour gap between walking my daughters to school and my first scheduled meeting of the day, so the workout happens at 8am on an empty stomach and a (hopefully) full night's sleep. This morning was a bit rough since it was only 12 hours after the previous day's workout, but it was great to get it done and establish a high baseline of energy at the start of the day.

Today's breakfast was eggs and rice, and lunch was an open-faced tuna sandwich with some pulled beef as a side:

I need to get sufficient protein for recovery but don't want to be drinking whey powder shakes, so my pulled beef is a life saver.

Unfit Thoughts

I originally titled this section "Fat Thoughts", but realized that wasn't correct. The right kind of fat doesn't make you fat. There are entire weight loss plans based on the principle that the human body processes fat more efficiently that carbohydrates as an energy source. I'll get into that some other time, but it leads to the point today's entry...

Waaaaay back in the spring of 1997, I took the only job that anyone would give a 16-year-old in my town:

That's right, I was in the burger assembly business. I learned A LOT of terrifying things about fast food during my time there, but nothing was more eye opening than this rack:

Think of it as a mainframe. Inside each of those boxes is a 3-gallon bag of concentrated syrup that is mixed with carbonated water and delivered to this dumb terminal:

There was a day when one of those Coca-Cola syrup bags ruptured and spilled all over my hands. . . it's hard to describe how thick and gritty the consistency was, and it took a while to scrub it off. It could probably be used as an industrial engine degreaser. If I could give one piece of fitness advice, it would be this:

Don't drink soda.

Coffee is my Red Bull. Black Tea is my afternoon Diet Coke. Milk is my Gatorade. Beer goes wonderfully with burgers. And don't forget plain old water. All of these drinks have beneficial and/or redeeming qualities, but soda has none. It's wholly manufactured and provides the opposite of nutrition. I think people are waking up to this, and it'll be interesting to see how multi-billion dollar industrial conglomerates like Coca-Cola revamp their businesses to survive when their customers figure out they don't need overpriced branded sugar water.

I appreciate you how to manage the time, even though you are busy with your activities but you have time to escort children to school,
And you also had time to exercise even if only briefly

Thanks, the time management takes a bit of work, but I usually find myself more energized if I do a lot of things efficiently than do a couple things inefficiently.

Yes I salute you....

I stopped drinking Soda long ago after I watched the movie Syrup, it's all just Sugar like the title states. Have you heard about Ketogenic diet? I try to avoid Processed foods when I dine out. Also, I wanted to ask you why do you workout on an empty stomach?

Yes, I've heard of the ketogenic diet, first time was via a Tim Ferriss podcast interviewing Dom D'Agostino. It's pretty intriguing. . . if I ever get cancer, I would try the ketogenic diet out pretty quickly.

I prefer to work out on an empty stomach because I can push myself a little bit harder without fear of acid reflux or nausea. Sometimes I'll eat a banana beforehand, but otherwise empty is best.

Haha, I hope you never get cancer. The ketogenic diet was introduced for people who have epilepsy and diabetes. Alright, even I find it pretty comfortable to workout on an empty stomach but people have advised me not to do that as it will cause loss of muscle. Do you think it would matter much?

I too find these sugary fizzy drinks to be way overrated. I can't even drink more than a few sips.

I've heard a lot about the ketogenic diet for getting your body to run on fats rather than on carbs. I've seen people losing a tremendous amount of body fat with just a change in their diet. It's amazing.

Yeah, the ketogenic diet is pretty surprising/amazing. My sister was able to lose a lot of weight with it as well, just goes to show how backwards a lot of the low-fat/high-sugar dietary advice of the last 50 years has been way off.

It's better to do the workout early in the morning, i think...!🏋🏻

it will give u the positive boost and enrich the freshness of ur mind..!! good to see u r not relying on protein shakes but on natural protein sources. more or less. thos protein shakes always have side effects of body. so its better not to use them frequently...! 👌

and yes, soda is really a piece of junk..!

i've always preferred coffee over soda. not to mention, soda increase fat too..! good to know the inner story behind this business from a guy who've actual experience of this soda market..!!
Stay blessed, man...! 😇
~Greetings from Tennis Girl 🎾🎾

I've done two morning workouts so far, and they definitely are the way to go. My energy is a lot higher and more consistent throughout the day, and it negates some of the effects of a poor night's sleep.

yeah, that's why many health specialist suggest morning workout instead of at night...
Cheers..! 🙌

Looks like you always have busy days. May be it's little tough to maintain everything alongside your workout. Good luck @grolelo.
Btw I really like your piece of advice about fitness

If I could give one piece of fitness advice, it would be this:

Coffee is my Red Bull. Black Tea is my afternoon Diet Coke. Milk is my Gatorade.

I agree with moderate consumption of wine, beer, cheese, chocolate, ice cream, etc...

I don't agree with moderate consumption of lead, mercury, antifreeze, paint, bleach, etc...

It's probably an extreme point of view, but I lump sugary soda in with the latter group. It just has no redeeming qualities.

Breakfast in the morning is delicious, though simple but looks very tasty and nutritious .. I really like eggs ... For me to install eggs very practical and easy.

Eggs are the best! Delicious, complete protein, and they can be prepared so many different ways. Human beings were so smart to domesticate chickens ;-P

Indeed, Soda is among the most poisonous things people and especially Americans drink on an everyday basis.

I mean, Soda is pretty widespread throughout the globe, but in the US it flows like tap water, it's crazy.

Cheers for changing your life one workout at a time.

I visited the Aulani Disney Resort in Hawaii once and saw these throughout the property:

You buy a $20 souvenir mug on arrival and can have unlimited soda for the duration of your stay. I was pretty shocked/disgusted/appalled that such a thing existed. And it may sound judgmental as hell, but the people visiting those stations looked every bit like the stereotype of the fat stupid American tourist. Sad.

Yeap, it's really sad...

The truth is, grolelo, they don't even think about it.

It's like a parallel mindset. When I started exercising I started paying way more attention to what I would fuel my body with. You start tor really care and a "shift" happens.

These people simply don't care, they are all for instant gratification, not thinking in the long run... then they get health problems and blame it on genetics.

I am onto my 4 week of healthy eating, I cut out sodas about a year ago, can't stand the taste off coke now

I tried Coke once in 2014 as an experiment. . . I got through maybe half the can before my teeth started vibrating from the hyper-sweetness and my heart started beating erratically. Haven't tried again since, nothing more to learn there!

I'm trying to wean my family of it slowly shhhh lol

Good luck! It's one of those out of sight, out of mind things. . . if they don't have access to it, after a couple days they probably won't miss it.

That's what i am hoping for :) thank you
