Today's Sustainable Feast in the Garden of Eden
Fall is setting in here at the Garden of Eden, and we are giving thanks for abundance!
We made a delicious feast for our volunteers and guests today, and of course we did all of our cooking over fire using our handmade earthen rocket stoves in our sustainable outdoor kitchen! As usual, there was more than enough food for everyone!
We prepared grilled salmon, breaded chicken strips, mashed potatoes, steamed broccoli and cauliflower, sautéed mushrooms & onions, and a gorgeous garden salad with a creamy pickled garlic chimichurri sauce.
We started the feast with our daily raw salad. We laid a bed of garden fresh and wildcrafted greens and topped them with red peppers, green apples, red onions, pomegranate seeds, hemp seeds, sprouted sunflower seeds, avocado slices, and wildcrafted oxalis!
These incredible plants came out of the Earth for free. It is absolutely amazing and divine that we can eat them to enhance health and wellness in our own bodies, plus they are delicious!!
We take our plants very seriously and invest lots of time and energy in planting, raising, harvesting, preparing, and sharing them.
We served a homemade sauce on the side. This slightly spicy chimichurri is a mix of herbs from our garden with lots of garlic, feta, homemade mayo, pickle juice, and a dash of our dried peppers.
We made a salad to garnish our salad! This one uses our wee golden yellow tomatoes, and we tossed them in olive oil with more herbs and a sprinkle of pink Himalayan salt.
We made a large platter of juicy, fatty, pink salmon over the grill. It is basted in oil and even more herbs!
It's great fun to cook over fire. It's primal and satisfying, it smells good, tastes good, and is extremely sustainable. Instead of creating pollution just to feed ourselves, we are actually burning wood that was destined to be "trash" had we not given it a more valuable purpose.
We repeat how profound our outdoor kitchen truly is, because we hope to inspire people to consider every aspect of their lives, especially the "basic" yet most important elements such as how you choose to feed yourself and acquire and prepare your food.
For one side, we made sautéed mushrooms and onions with lots of herbs. Lately we have been eating a dish like this almost every single day, because not only do we have these ingredients available in great abundance, but it is delicious and wholesome!
We also made a huge bowl of our über dank mashed potatoes! We boiled russet potatoes over the rocket stove flame until fork tender. Then, we mashed the potatoes with a bit of cooking water, heavy cream, cream cheese, LOTS of fresh minced garlic, chives, and plenty of pink Himalayan salt.
Feast your eyes upon all this delicious, wholesome, honorable & sustainable FREE food!!!
It was a wonderful meal shared in wonderful company, but probably the most satisfying part of it is that we really do feast like this every. single. day. It is an amazing reality that anyone can access!
Food is important, and we hope to inspire people to really take time to eat, enjoy it, and share it with someone you love. We also hope to inspire more and more sustainable practices in regards to food!
