Hola Steemians

It's me, mikeCee aka the steemian of the carribean.
Today everything revolves around bananas. Häääh bananas. That's right, the well known yellowish elongated fruit. Mostly a bit crooked, often misused as a phallic symbol and in most cases very sweet.

Bananas, sweet and popular everywhere. But check it out: watch out: banana is not the same as banana

And of course the banana exists here as well on the Caribbean island, no question. But watch out: In most Caribbean or Latin American countries there are many fruits that are similar to the banana. But they are often completely different in shape and taste.

The banana, or rather the word banana you'll find it only here at the well-known tourist beaches, such as Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, etc. But if you drive inland or here in the capital Santo Domingo, so the sellers will look at you with crooked eyes. "Banana", as we know it is very rare and isn't needed here in everyday life. A banana means ... oh yes, I'll come to that later. I'll let you guess a little bit.

Let's start with the banana instruction:

Plátano Maduro or better known as sweet plantain or cooking bananas

Originally grown only in Asia, it is now known in all tropical and subtropical regions of America and the Caribbean. She has a hearty taste. In the optimal maturity it is yellow and has black spots and tastes very sweet. It is often even used as a dessert. It is usually cooked or deep-fried. It is a lot bigger than our famous banana.

Plátano Verde, the actual cooking banana

A special plantain, which is still harvested green and belongs to the basic food here in the Dominican Republic. You can compare it to a potato. Uncooked, it is completely inedible. The locals fry them or cook them into a kind of potato stick. It has a special taste that I first had to get used to. Meanwhile, I love the things. It is inexpensive everywhere. There are hundreds of recipes with "Platanos".

and now our banana - No, this is a "Guineo Verde"

But we are close. A Guineo Verde is, as the name verde (green) already suggests green picked from the plant and is completely inedible without cooking. She is very small and comes closest to our famous yellow bananas. If you pick them later, their color turns yellow and the taste becomes sweet. Like the Platano Verde, the Guineo verde is also cooked or deep-fried. It is especially popular with the poor rural population and actually costs as much as nothing.

But now ... Did you found out, how our banana is called here.
It's easy. Next time if you'll go on vacation in the Dominican Republic and you wanna buy a banana, ask for a...

Hasta luego.

It is amazing how many different kinds of fruits in the banana family, or that resemble bananas, there are. From lady finger looking bananas to the larger plantains. There's nothing like frying one and putting on some kind of syrup or sour cream.

Of course, banana bread with nuts is a favorite around our house. :)

There are some more here. But need them for a next article haha. Thanx for upvoting and enjoy your bananas.

Gotta ask.. Where are you from? Amo demasiado los plátanos, de la manera que sean. You just showed them to the world, and what a nice way of doing it!
