Making homemade tomato sauce - Italian Recipe!

in #food6 years ago

Hey Steemit friends!

I grew up in a household with Italian parents. We had homemade sauce every week. I'm going to share the recipe that was handed down to me, and also show photos of me making a batch today.

Cut up a large onion.

I happened to have some fresh herbs that I'll be growing this year. You need the trifecta of Italian herbs, Oregano, Basil and Rosemary. Get some fresh of all of those.

Simmer those ingredients on medium for 5 minutes or until the onions all turn transparent.

Add 4 cans of tomato paste. Then fill 4 of those cans full of water and add that.

The recipe calls for two normal sized cans of crushed tomatoes. The supermarket didn't have that but did have large size cans, so I added one of those. Then the recipe calls for one can of water, so I filled up this larger can half way and added that.

Add more fresh herbs

Bring to a simmer and then turn down heat and simmer for 2 hours.

I then let the sauce cool and then put into canning jars.

This recipe makes 6 pints of sauce. Into the freezer it goes, just like that.

I love cooking pasta, tomato sauce is always a main ingrediants, thanks for the recipe!

If I don't use wine will that make any differents or affect the sauce?

It definitely will affect the taste. The alcohol burns off, so just the flavor remains.

I see, cause I can't take alcohol so need to skip that part!

Thank for letting me know!

No problem. I’m not a doctor and this isn’t medical advice but I think there’s not alcohol content after the cooking is over. I don’t know if there’s a way that could be tested.

No worries, I think I can just skip that.
Thank you for taking your time to explain to me, really appreciated!

That looks amazing!

Thanks for sharing this recipe, I'll have to whip up a batch soon!
