New Study: Drinking Tea Might Help To Protect Against Cognitive Decline

in #food7 years ago

A new study from the National University of Singapore, suggests that drinking tea might help to prevent cognitive decline in the elderly.

The researchers suggest that by drinking tea regularly that it could help to potentially reduce the risk of cognitive decline in the elderly by at least 50 percent. They say it might even be able to reduce it as much as 86 percent for the individuals who are at risk of Alzheimer's.

The longitudinal study involved 957 participants who were Chinese seniors and they aged from 55 years and older.

Specifically it was tea that was brewed from tea leaves that they saw might be a big player in helping to reduce the onset of cognitive decline in the elderly. A cup of tea every single day to be considered regular consumption.

Researchers also suggest that the type of tea doesn't really make a difference. It only mattered that the tea was brewed from tea leaves (think green tea, black tea, ooolong tea). Scientists say that their data supports the notion that if you make one simple lifestyle change, like consuming tea brewed from tea leaves on a regular basis, that it might help to reduce the risk of developing cognitive impairments later on in life.

They credit the bioactive compounds (like catechins, theaflavins, L-theanine, and others) in the tea leaves with providing the long-term benefit.

They say that these compounds contribute anti-inflammatory bioactive properties and antioxidant properties and therefore they have the potential to help to protect the brain from damage; helping to reduce the risk of developing neurocognitive disorders.

More research in this area is needed in order to better understand the biological mechanisms related to the tea consumption. They've published their findings from their recent study in The Journal of Nutrition, Health, & Aging just a few months ago.
