'Ethical' Farm Exposed For Animal Abuse: Tesco Suspends Sales

After a 3 month investigation into Brome Grange Farm and Tree Farm in Suffolk, now the RSPCA has launched an investigation after undercover footage showed animal abuse at the farms. The footage was the work of the Animal Justice Project after they allegedly received a tip of the abuse taking place at the farm.

Despite former scandals facing certain farms and suppliers etc, Tesco has stuck with some in the past, but on this issue they've already decided to suspend chicken sales. For those who aren't familiar with Tesco, this is the largest retailer in the UK.

What is surprising about the recent undercover investigation is that both farms had been signed up to the Red Tractor food standards scheme which promotes a "world leading food safety standard" and food that is "traceable, safe, and farmed with care". As well, the Trees Farm was also accredited by the RSPCA which is supposed to signal a certain standard of animal welfare.

There are calls now for the RSPCA to prosecute individuals who violated animal safety standards, following the removal of Trees Farm from the RSPCA accreditation scheme. Both farms have also been suspended from Red Tractor.

So far, Tesco has suspended chicken sales from Brome Grange Farm until it finishes investigating the footage. It's reported that only Brome Grange had been a supplier of chicken to Tesco.
