Why should we consume yogurt with probiotics?

The growing awareness of the relationship between diet and health has led to an increasing demand for food products that contribute to health beyond basic nutrition, including the so-called "Functional Foods", considered as those that in addition to providing the recommended nutrients, exert beneficial effects on one or more functions of the organism, promoting health and reducing the risk of disease.

Probiotics are one of the most prominent subgroups within functional foods. They are products that contain microorganisms defined and viable enough to modify the intestinal microbiota of the host, thus exerting a beneficial effect on the health of the host. At present, many aspects of their mechanisms of action are still unknown; however, its functionality is recognized in: the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, the reduction of lactose intolerance, the modulation of the immune response and the reduction of cholesterol values. Nowadays, yoghurts and other fermented milks are the main vehicles for the contribution of probiotics, since in addition to the functional properties of the inoculated bacteria, these foods have a great acceptance in the population.

The consumption of probiotics is recommended to anyone who wants to favor the balance of the intestinal microbiota. In people with antibiotic treatment, in children, in the elderly, in pregnancy, in intestinal disturbances or to improve lactose intolerance. They are also used to reduce the effects of diarrhea and constipation or inflammatory bowel diseases.

Great piece on probiotics and yoghurt is a good delivery vehicle. Adding a couple points, any functional product (added probiotic) you should always look for species information and strain if possible, like GBI-30 which is Bacillus coagulans GBI-30 or BC30(R). Also, there is new evidence that there is a direct connection between the microbiome and the brain so that prebiotics and probiotics can impact mood, cognition and more. Very early days. Finally, prebiotics, ingredients such as fiber and pectins, also impact the microbiome and confer a health benefit.
