Date Night: Out for Mexican Food in Leuven!

Saturday, me and my girlfriend went out to have some Mexican food in our hometown of Leuven. We decided to go to one of our favorite Mexican restaurants in town, El Sombrero, which is a great little family run restaurant right in the center Leuven.

Cocktails & Starter

The cocktails were excellent for both me and my girlfriend, I decided to go with a margarita while my girlfriend went for the piña colada. Both drinks were very balanced and I personally found them to be much better than you would find in the average cocktail bars in town.

Since it was a date night, we thought it would be a good idea to order a starter to share. The Tapas de Mama looked most appeasing and had some dishes that we hadn't tried before. Here's a list of everything that was on the plate: Papa relleno, ceviche, chili con carne, 2 croquettas de batata y chorizo, 2 camarones con salsa verde and one bacon tortilla. We were already pretty stuffed after eating this, so we definitely needed to take things a bit slower for the main course.

Main Course

I went for a pretty standard steak with a Mexican twist, Biftec Ranchero, which was a really big medium-rare steak topped with home-made chili-con-carne and nachos on the side. My girlfriend had the Combinacion Manzanilla, which featured a meatball tostada & chili-con-carne with rice. Both dishes were very tasty, but we couldn't finish everything because of the large starter we shared previously.

The Experience

We really enjoyed our night out, the food and drinks were very delicious and the service was near perfect. We didn't have to wait more than 15 minutes between each course while the restaurant was packed. One thing that could have been better was the lighting in the restaurant. During our main course, they dimmed the lights and it almost seemed like they turned on some kind of blacklight. We couldn't even see what kind of color our food was. We didn't let that bother us too much though and the night in general was still great.
