Food contains different kinds of nutrients which perform different functions in the body. Foods can be grouped according to their nutrients and the functions they perform in the body..
Therefore, foods can be classified into three major groups.. They are:
a) Body building foods: These foods contain nutrients that help the body to grow and repair itself. These nutrients are called proteins. Foods in this group include milk and milk products, eggs, meat (including chicken, turkey, duck, etc) fish, bean, groundnut, walnut, almond, etc
b) Energy giving foods: These foods contain nutrients that give the body energy. The nutrients are called carbohhydrates and fats. This groups consists of foods like rice, wheat, millet, maize or corn, yam, cocoyam, fassava and cassava products, potato, plantain, oil such as palm oil,vegetable oil, butter, milk, cheese, sugar, etc
C) Protective foods: These foods contains nutrients which help to protect our body from harm. The nutrients include vitamins and minerals
foods in this group are made up of vegetables like peas, carrots, onions, tomatoes, cabbage and other green vegetables such as ego, ugu,okra,ewedu,oha,waterleaf,etc. Fresh fruits are also part of this group. Orange, pineapple,pawpaw,mango,tangerine,banana,etc..are examples of fruits as protective foods
