Food in Beijing Series #3: What’s for breakfast ?( Part 2)

in #food6 years ago (edited)

In my previous post here, I presented some of the typical Chinese breakfast you can get when traveling to Beijing. Every province has their own specialty, so what you get in Beijing is different from what you get in XiAn, Guangzhou or Hong Kong. But since Beijing is the capital of China, what you can get here can be a variety of different kinds of breakfast in China.

In the previous post, I talked about Chinese steamed bun, dumplings, wonton, Chinese breadstick, soybean milk and Chinese pancake. This time, there will be another 6 more to add to your breakfast list.

“zhōu” 粥/ Congee

Congee is made of rice, cooked in water for a long time. It is considered as a healthy breakfast; think of it like eating a bowl of millet or oats. Why the Chinese like eating this? Because it is easier to digest in the morning before eating other solid food.
There are few kinds of congee, among them are white congee, Eight-beans congee, congee with lean pork and century egg( i will explain what is century egg in future post)
Taste: bland or savory

“Shǒu zhuā bǐng” is an option for anyone who wants a quick bite before heading anywhere. A wrap and a cup of soybean milk are good enough to make you full early in the morning, and if you’re hungry for more, there is always more food around the corner.

onlyinchina =)

Still too sweet for me!

then you could go for the healthier options then =D
visit Beijing someday and try all the things you can =)

I would love to visit China one day! I have always loved chinese food, but I think that I have probably barely scratched the surface over here. I really need to start cooking it more. Have you done any recipes that people in Europe/US could follow?

yup, i could tell you that Cilantro, soy sauce, sesame oil, onion and garlic play a big role in chinese cooking. Just give a try, stir fry meat with those ingredients(dont forget salt), and you can get it the chinese style. You can add ginger too =)

I call cilantro "coriander" I think! I do stir frys all the time, marinade the meat in soy sauce and sesame oil and then add various things as I fancy. Oyster sauce is a favourite. Teriyaki ( I know, Japanese!) is too. Loads of chopped vegetables too. So easy, and really good for you.

yup true. Lot of vegetables is good! China influence the way i eat and live, i take the good parts like eating ginger and drinking warm water because it keeps the body warm. Eat lots of vegetables but not too much because it's all about balance =)
I'm glad that you like chinese cooking too!

Congee all day everyday!! Even when I am travelling, I was always craving for congee~
But, I was pretty curious and tempted to try toufu nao, guess it's taste very savory which is totally my kind of food :D

This is awesome. I'd never heard of some of these things, but it sounds fascinating. I love eating steel cut oats for breakfast, so I imagine rice would be very similar. The cake with the goji berries looks yummy!

oh yes indeed. It is similar! well, the food i posted are mostly traditional, the chinese do eat oats but most of the time they eat at home or mix with rice! Thanks for dropping by =)

Very nice to see these other foods from China. Even though I have been to Beijing I know so little about what is being eaten there. Everything looks good and now my stomach is growling!

thanks for reading my post Erik! well japan is close to beijing so you might be able to get similar breakfast in Japan =)

Oh mann! You're making me salivate in the middle of the night. Hahaha. These are all my favourite food! Tho i've never try goji cake before 😄

hope it makes you hunger for more food =P
