The lotus flower. The lotus plant stands in the pond and is seasonal. The flower blooms stay for a few days till the petals fall away.

The lotus is common to the tropics. As a flower which stands out and not usually used in a bouquet, it is used more for worship in temples and sometimes as garlands.

The lotus is a medicinal plant and its roots and stems are used in Ayurveda preparations.

Interestingly, the stem is cut into small pieces, salted and dried and fried in oil. It is a costly delicacy and mostly favored by the south Indians.
