Flower Series #24

Grass-leaved Stitchwort (Stellaria graminea)

is one of 13 species in the star flower family (Stellaria), belonging to the Caryophyllaceae family. It grows in woodland, pasture and meadow or on a nutritional basis up to 1,050 moh. It is originally in Eurasia, and is introduced in North America.
The plant has relatively narrow lance-to heart-shaped leaves, and thin stem. There are tiny, pointed beads on each stem, and the plant have almost only leaves on the lower half.

The petals and leaflets are about as long. The flowers have five split white petals that look like ten slender petals. There are often more (2-4) single flowers on each stalk - a flower on each branch.

Prevalence

Gresstjerneblom grows on dry, calcareous or humus rich soil, on meadows, along lawns, roadsides, cultural land, grazing, forests, mountains and river banks. In the Nordic region it is found in the whole area except southern Finnmark and the interior of Iceland. Otherwise, it has almost total distribution in the Nordic countries, up to the high mountain at 1,050 moh.
