flowers orchids

The strange form of orchid flowers, sometimes very close to the pollinating insect, has always fascinated naturalists. The name orchids comes from the Latin orchis (testis) in reference to the two tubercles present at the base of certain terrestrial orchids. Aphrodisiac virtues have often been attributed to orchids.
Already known to the Aztecs, vanilla is the only orchid grown as a spice. The orchidomania (heard the madness of orchids) reached its peak in the 19th century and continued into the 20th century. The plants were collected in the wild and sold at the price of gold. Today, orchids are widely grown. Numerous hybridizations have led to the creation of tens of thousands of varieties often better adapted than wild varieties to apartment cultivation.
The flower of the orchids is composed of 3 sepals and 3 petals. The central petal called labelle often has a particular shape.
We will only mention here some of the most common indoor orchids.
Species and varieties of orchids:
Orchids live in all environments and on all continents except the Arctic. The most beautiful ones often come from tropical regions. The 25,000 species described in the wild gave rise to tens of thousands of hybrids.
Their origin determines their precise temperature requirements, but all accept average temperatures of 15 to 25 ° C.
The Cattleya are native to Central and South America. Their flowers are spectacular, sophisticated and often fragrant. They are enjoyable at temperatures of 16 to 25 ° C and require a high humidity of the air.
The Cymbidiums are native to the Himalayas. They are part of the easiest orchid to grow and can even be grown outside in summer and in an off-frost room in winter. The new Cymbidium hybrids bloom throughout the year, not just in winter.
The Paphiopedilum (Venus Clogs) have a lip turned into a purse. Their flowers are spectacular. Their growth is often slow but flowering lasts several weeks.
Oncidiums like intermediate temperatures of 10 to 24 ° C. The flowers are often yellow, bronze or brown.
The Dendrobiums are native to Asia, Australia, New Zealand. The amateurs distinguish two types of Dendrobium according to the origin of the hybrids. Nobile Dendrobiums enjoy a cooler night temperature. Take them outside until the middle of autumn. Dendrobiums of the Phalaenopsis type are less demanding on the temperature differences for their floral induction. They will be grown all year round in apartments.
The Miltonia are native to the Andes. Their flowers remind one of their thoughts. They like temperatures neither too hot nor too cold (from 12 to 25 ° C). They bloom in early summer and autumn.
The Vandas are often of tropical origin (India Burma). They should be grown between 16 and 30 ° C. They are famous for their exceptional blue color.

The orchid is the star of flowers. At once mysterious and colorful, she reigns like a Queen in your interior. Delicate, this green plant needs specific care to flourish and bloom from one year to the next.

How to make an orchid bloom again ?

Orchids demand a lot of brightness to bloom and be healthy. Producers who provide them with optimal growing conditions are able to obtain successive blooms for many months. To succeed in making your orchid bloom, two tips: give them a maximum of light and water them regularly.
When the temperature is as good as nocturnal as well as diurnal over 18 °, take your plants under a tree so that they benefit from a maximum of luminosity or even a few sunny rays.
As soon as temperatures cool you will bring your orchids into the house by installing them in front of a window oriented to the east preferably. If the orientation is due south, remember to shade the window slightly in the hottest hours so that the plant is not burned by the direct rays of the midday sun.
The orchids are satisfied with a copious watering per week; the best way is to soak the base of the pots in a basin filled with water at room temperature for one morning. An addition of "special orchid" fertilizer is desirable once every fortnight.

trick and advise:

if you have an aquarium, use the water recovered after cleaning to irrigate or bask your orchids. Water is rich in organic matter.
When your plants are outdoors in summer, water them regularly, always with water at room temperature and baste them from time to time in dry weather.
In autumn, install your orchid in full light but in a cool and not too warm. A winter garden or a luminous room without heating will do the perfect thing. Do not neglect watering or fertilizer.
A few specific treatments can make them bloom again and keep them from year to year in beauty!
