The weather was nice and we decided to visit Heinola, a small town half an hour north of Lahti on the motorway. According to Tripadvisor, the Provincial Police Chief L.A. Aschan's House, built in 1780 and a museum should've been open today. Turns out it wasn't. We ate at a Chinese restaurant instead. I took some photos in Heinola.

These buildings are not more than about a century old.

A typical Finnish small town looks something like this. Old buildings look much more attractive to us now but when the decision was made to tear down most of them, it must have seemed clear that they were outdated and had to be replaced with new buildings.

There is a boat harbor here as well. There is a lot of boat traffic here in the summer as the river Kymijoki connects Lake Päijänne, the second largest lake in the country and the Gulf of Finland.
The ice sculptures have almost melted beyond recognition. The temperature was +5 C.

When we visited Heinola the previous time some local people told us that L.A. Aschan's house is one the oldest buildings still standing in town. That is possible because the town was received its charter in 1776. In fact, it is the second oldest one. There is an old church from 1755.
Its wonderful, too bad in India they are putting down old houses or whatever in the name of development, its really sad .But I'm glad that Finns are taking care of them :)
A lot has been demolished here, too, that, in hindsight, should have been preserved. It is clear that buildings have am limited life cycle and not all buildings, perhaps not even most, are worth preserving once their designed life is over. But it would've been wise to keep more of them that actually were because those towns that have a lot of old buildings left are considered more attractive than those with almost nothing left.
Very nice your photos @markkujantunen it seems a very charming and quiet city, I saw that has a bird sanctuary could you visit it? haha I want to know what the sculpture was, by the way let me tell you something I had no idea that there was a Sauna-sitting World Championships

You know, it's a national sport to feed into those already existing notions of Finnish strangeness by exaggerating things. Beware if someone tells you something outlandish about Finland. It's probably someone playing games with you (when a native of Finland) or another victim.
Yes, it would probably take a minimum five or six adults to form a circle holding hands around that tree.
