Railway to Lahti Stadium + Old Steam Locomotive

in #finland6 years ago (edited)

I was curious about the railway to the stadium, so I decided to get some exercise by walking it as far as I thought would be safe and legal. I was rewarded with a fat prize in the end: an old steam engine in good paint just standing on a sidetrack.

I'll let the pictures (and the captions) speak themselves:

Here we go.

The stadium is being renovated.

Clearly broken. That metal whatever has come off.

This is a bike path and in regular use. A manual switch ahead.

Everything is rusty and old.

What is this? It seems to be in a process of disintegration.

20180517_101654

Is it supposed to protect something from the elements?

20180517_101723

Not many trains under the bridge for a long time.

If you take the left turn, you'll end up at the factory I was close to about a week ago which I made a post about. The main railway not far when you turn to the right.

This is a switch area border or something like that.

I wonder what that sign means.

Industrial buildings. There's something in the distance. Is that a train car or a locomotive?

20180517_102723

It's a steam locomotive! Let's call it Steem Engine.

20180517_102534

It's beautiful! It should be in a museum and not here under the open sky.

Who would have thought that you can find a train that can lead to Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry.
If you walked a little longer by the railway you might see the huge castle on the outskirts.

That might have been the last thing I saw. The main railway was close the locomotive.

I would risk it if there was a magic school and do anything to study there :b

Did you manage to find out why the stadium had train tracks so close?, well I suppose they modify the sports center for another sport because the winter has already passed, or is it simple a coincidence the works they are doing? that is cool, "markkujantunen pathfinder" (I always wanted to use that word ) how long did you have to walk to find that jewel? half mile or 1 mile maybe.

It was indeed built to bring spectators to skiing events. I found an article in the regional newspaper about "a nostalgic Ski Games train" bringing people directly to the stadium in January 2017. The cars were built in the 1950's.

I only had to walk about one kilometre or less.

I suppose the stadium renovations are just routine work that has to be done from time to time.

They are excellent images the roads are in disuse but in good condition also the railroad. What are the four towers?

What towers do you mean?

Sorry it's 3. The third photo.

Those three are ski jumping hills. The ski jumper glides down the tower gaining speed and jumps at the end landing on the downhill. Here's what it looks like from the point of view of the jumper from this very hill (the largest one):

Wow friend markku. This video I could play it because I'm with good connection. Great ... I'd like to be there at least once. LOL

Definitely worth the walk. When I was growing up we had steam engines on the tracks hauling the local brewery train trucks. I think they still do as it wasn't that long ago lol. We used to stand on the bridge and could see the fire in the furnace when it came past. They are superb to watch. Agree it shouldn't be left in the open. That is your towns history left to rust away. Nice story and photos. thanks Markku.

I never get tired of trains. The mere smell of tar coming from the sleepers set an excited tone for this little exploration.

All the photos are great and I am also learning since you are applying the technique you mentioned a long time ago.
Now see what nature does in the beginning the man took away his space, now she claims it. I see how everything is green and growing in turn where it is supposed not to grow in the operating state of the trains passing

Is that your Mercedes?

No, I drive a Toyota. I had to magnify the photo to recognize the make. I still don't recognize the model. I considered buying a used Merc two summers ago but was deterred by corrosion problems being all too common in the about decade-old E models that I was interested in. I came to my senses and bought a car no bigger than I actually needed.

I am also buying a small Toyota in few weeks because other cars would be too unreliable or too expensive

That's a very good idea. I bought a Verso S because it's a Toyota and spacious for its external measurements. It has not received the best of reviews in terms of driving experience and comfortability but I don't care. It is good enough in that department and should be reliable.

Wow I cannot believe they were still making them in the 50's!!! Very cool.

It felt like a jackpot to realize what was ahead when I was walking on the track.

Lovely man. I have fond love and many memories of trains and the scenic trip is very refreshing. I don't mind expression, but can for the life me not get why the youngsters have to deface history

You can use smartphonephotography so i think that's all of picture are capture by smartphone

Ok that's really good work..
