Welcome to Death Cranes Rapid!

in #finland8 years ago (edited)

At summertime Finnish nature's signature marks are usually clear blue skies, pure water, green forests and thousands and thousands of lakes. We all know this is not always true, Finland isn't solely known for it's perfect summer evenings or lakes where you could practically almost drink water straight from the lake.

But let's forget the fact that micro plastics have now also been found from Finland's lakes as trash like bottle caps and plastic bags don't necessarily end up in trash bins but in the nature. And the fact that usually Finish summer lasts for, oh I don't know, three days and the rest of the year contains slush 'n sleet. And three to six months of that is slush 'n sleet in darkness.

This is a picture-perfect post. The pictures may not be perfect, but this post is all about clear blues skies, pure nature and the quietness of the countryside.

Welcome to Kalmakurjenkoski, Terälahti. Address Niemikyläntie 110, Tampere.
Kalmakurjenkoski = Death cranes rapid, Terälahti = Blade bay, Niemikyläntie = Ness villages road, Kalmakurjentie = Death cranes road.

Sounds wonderful and inviting, doesn't it? "Step right up people, here we have death and blades."

Kalmakurki (Death crane) is located on the Kiimajoki paddling route.
Kiimajoki = Heat river / Estrous cycle river / Rut river.
I'll choose Rut river because it sounds groovy.

Seriously. I can take things seriously too. Be serious. Or at least I can try. It's just these names that I can't seem to get over. But I will try. My sense of humor has stuck to the age of a ten year old. So pardon my humor.

The paddling route of Kiimajoki (Rut river) takes you to the Kalmakurki (Death crane) mill. The river runs under the bridge and if you are paddling there, you have to come ashore as there is an extremely difficult rapid beside the mill. Go ashore to the left. On the right side there's private property.

So do not go there and take photographs of it, on it, at it or on top of it.

If you do, do not get caught. And don't post what you did to a place where it will be permanent record after seven days of posting.

Right click on the photo and open it to new window or tab if you want to see it properly.

These pictures were taken in 2016 with my Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom. I don't know if the mill and the structures surrounding it are still standing, although the mill is protected. We are planing on a road trip. If that takes us to Terälahti and anywhere near the mill, I will check out it's current condition.

Picture perfect and quiet countryside. Barns painted with red ochre paint.

So if you are paddling on this Rut river route, you have to walk to the other side of the road that goes over the bridge and go to the small and calm pond with your kayak. From there you can continue paddling in the quiet and beautiful Finnish nature.

Here's a link if you want to know more about the waterfalls of Finland and especially Kalmakurjenkoski. (In English and in Finnish.)

Here's more info about Kiimajoki paddlingroute if you want to spend a beautiful summer day admiring Finnish nature. (Only in Finnish)

Sort:

Looks so much like Astoria, where I live. Many Finnish settlers and influences here too.

Maybe that's the reason they came and stayed there. Similarity of the surroundings and nature.

Yes, I think so.
