Ostrobotnia is Sinking

Like it does every spring!

Finland is pretty flat all around, but Ostrobotnia reagion is on a whole different level, I mean, it's on one level, one low level, hardly above the sea level. So every spring when the snow starts melting, all the rivers overflow. This year it's especially bad because we had so much snow. It's a tradition for us to go see the floods with the family, and we call this flood drive, it's a sister to the nature drive we also do, just driving around the almost empty Finland.

It's pretty funny that a lot of people gather around, everyone snapping pictures, both locals and people from elsewhere. I think the people in Ostrobotnia are pretty well equipped to handle the floods, because they are no surprise.

The river Kyröjoki turns into a giant slushie machine, churning huge pieces of ice and pushing them onto the fields and roads. The sound is pretty insane, you should really hear it in person. We came at a perfect time when the ice that had gathered around in places, blocking the water from running, suddenly started moving with a huge force. It felt pretty insane to be standing on a bridge when a massive ice block hit it and broke into smaller pieces like it was nothing. Sometimes they blow up the ice dams if they don't start moving on their own, but I've never been lucky enough to witness that.

This all should be fields, roads and dry farmland, but instead are now taken over by the flood.

Sort:

Millennia ago, the Dutch dealt with these problems by creating artificial hills to build their villages on.

The Dutch guys were pretty good with water, but then again they never really had to worry about the water that comes from mountains.

Actually the Dutch do have to deal with water from the mountains, the Alps. The Netherlands is the delta for the Rhine. On top of that, they have to deal with storm surges from the North Sea.

Maybe the Finns should live in houseboats when the Spring floods come. =)

These are actually very good photos. I wish you had taken a video of the ice floating down the river.

Thanks, I actually hate taking photos during full sun, but I'm glad to hear you like them. I suck at taking video and I refuse to use the automatic settings :P

I agree. It's unpleasant to take photos in such bright sunlight. They turned out good anyway. It's interesting to see for oneself the conditions down there. Despite the difficult conditions, it would have been interesting to hear the rumble of the ice.

Now this is scary. Are you a mind reader?😝
(My current art project will be about a floating castle that sunk. And you post a photo with a floating house...WTF?)

Well doh, of course I'm a mind reader, and Mother Nature also, so I made the river flood.

So is my dirty mind in trouble? Or could I give you a snack and keep my secrets safe?

I could be kept quiet for a while with snacks, but if I were you, I'd tone down the Kamasutra stuff, I'm not even that flexible.

sounds like a reasonable deal...On condition that some of those snacks will be presented on top of my body.

Lovely pictures. Reminds me a bit of my family's post-hurricane tradition wherein we all walk around to see which trees have fallen. I guess every family has their own take on this depending on the climate.

For some reason I like floodings. Yes, I know its sometimes devastating and ruins someone's houses and lives and I'm terribly sorry for this but I like to see areas that are underwater which usually are not, especially do before and after photos. Ah fuck it im weird maybe I never should have typed this comment :D

Lol, I’m the same. Also I like to see some fall storms when trees fall and shit gets thrown around a little. But I’d never want to live in anywhere where there is legit hurricanes or earthquakes.

Heh lol I love storms as well, of course I dont want to be in cat5 hurricane but some fallen trees, seal level rise, some small chaos and something like that, I like :D

Yey, let’s be horrible together!

I fucking love natural disasters.

You and your alleged red beard are a natural disaster.

Dang! That's some serious flooding!

The last photo is amazing :D It's weird to see new lakes pop up out of nowhere
