Circle (movie) : it tries hard to not suck, but it's terrible

in #films5 years ago

This low-budget film tries to rope us in with an interesting concept for a film (it worked on me) and then hires bad actors and has 99% of the film take place in one room with dialogue that is so bad that it becomes difficult to watch very quickly.

The description of the movie is something along the lines of being trapped in a room and needing to decide whether or not 50 people live or die. I don't remember exactly what it was but they did a good job of roping me in because it seemed like it might be something along the lines of Saw (which overstayed its welcome but you can't argue the merits of at least a few of those films.)

I added it to my list and was enthusiastic about watching it... then was extremely annoyed and also bored after 10 minutes or so.

A bunch of people wake up in a room where they are all standing on red circles. If they leave the circle or touch anyone else in the room they get electrocuted and presumably die. Eventually a game of sorts begins and they have to choose who dies in a deadly board game. While this sounds interesting enough because it would introduce some pretty scary politics of a reality show into a fast pace game of elimination... the acting, save a few of the people out of the 50 is so bad that it makes the film difficult to watch.

The film also begins with everyone shouting over one another and asking questions over and over again that obviously no one would have the answer to. Even after it is determined that no one has ever been in this room before people continue to ask questions about it....

Dammit Karen, we literally just established no one knows anything ok!

one of a handful of people in this film that have any idea how to act

I'm not saying that a movie needs to have a ton of locations to be good, that isn't the case at all. The film "Buried" is one of the most terrifying and original films ever made in my opinion and that film takes place almost entirely in a box.

Some artsy people out there praised this film for it's window into overall society and I say to those folks that I realize that I never want to hang out with you because we have nothing in common. This film goes beyond being not entertaining, it manages to be annoying because the dialogue and acting is so bad that it starts to be funny for a bit and then it just grinds your gears.

I don't know what they could have done to make this film better but it might have started with having someone that knows how to write make the script and perhaps ended with deciding to not make the film at all.

On a scale of "Urgh!" to "Wowsers!" I easily give Circle the overall rating of.....

To give you an idea about how much I didn't like this movie know this: I would rather watch an Amy Schumer stand up "comedy" special than endure this 80 minutes of awfulness a second time

It kind of sounds like the plot of that movie Cube. At least a little bit. Was there at least a twist at the end or something to make it interesting or did it just end that half died and half went free?

it ends in an ambiguous manor. It is kind of left up to us to determine the overall motive of the captors but honestly, at that point I didn't care. This movie made me mad... don't watch it.

I will definitely make note of that! I agree with you on Saw by the way. Ground breaking for like the first two then after that it was kind of like really?
