When the US government notes that its prisons are too full to receive new inmates, a new law is created, allowing all illegal activities for 12 hours. This period, called the Night of Crime, is marked by thousands of murders, lynchings and other acts of violence throughout the country. The aim, according to the government, is to allow all citizens to release their violent impulses, ensuring peace on the other days of the year. In this context the family lives of James Sandin (Ethan Hawke), a security system vendor thrives thanks to Night of Crime. When the event occurs, however, the son of James accepts house a man chased by psychopaths. Soon, the whole family is in danger, either within their own home, with the presence of the unknown, or by threats from psychopaths in front of the property, which promise to come and kill everyone.
