Film Review: "Four Rooms" - The Best New Year's Eve Film...

in #film8 years ago (edited)

Alison Anders, Alexandre Rockwell, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino all got together and made a Movie in 1995.

Usually to have more than one director in a film can be a very bad call… you need a captain to lead the ship. In this case you have four Director’s… but … it was in fact, a great idea.

The movie takes place in one hotel over the corse of one night. And every filmmaker wrote and directed a room. (Four Rooms)

Tim Roth stars as a Bellhop, it's his first night of working there and it's new year’s eve out of all evenings. We follow him as he interacts with some of his clients.

First Room (The missing ingredient)

Alison Anders directed this first room. In this story The Bellhop has a coven of witches staying at the Hotel. They go there to perform a ritual. He get’s more involved than he wanted to… however this would be, by far, the best part of his night …

If I had to pick a least favourite room this would be it, however, It's very funny, full of peculiar humour and situations… (Madonna plays one of the witches.)

Second Room (The wrong man)

After the witches our favourite hotel employee get’s into the wrong room, honest mistake… the problem is that in that room he finds a total nut case of a man, playing some bizarre games with his wife. And yeah... he has a loaded gun too…

Third Room (The misbehavers)

Robert Rodriguez writes and directs this room staring Antonio Banderas.

It’s an hilarious segment. Antonio and his wife go out to celebrate New year’s and they live their kids alone… what follows is tremendously funny and entertaining.

This is where Rodriguez got the idea to what would become his “Spy Kids” franchise. This are actually the only Rodriguez's films I haven't seen yet, so I can't compare... but I can tell you this... the humour in this room is very adult like.

Forth Room (The man from Hollywood)

Quentin Tarantino plays himself (more or less) in this room directed by him… It is also a fantastic segment. it consists of a party in the Hotel’s penthouse and it’s a great ending for the film. Also a crazy situation for Tim Roth's character...

In Short:

I would say this is a great film. I was very surprised when I found out it wasn’t well received and it did not made any money… Since everyone I speak too likes the film.

Maybe it was a bit ahead of it’s time, vis a vis the format, four “short films” in one…

Personally I think it’s great, filled with an excellent cast and made by very talented filmmakers. .

If you haven’t seen it, go see it.

I saw this movie years ago and found it very enjoyable too. Some things never get the appreciation they deserve at the time they are new, they need to 'age' and cultivate an audience.

Hey! Thank you fro your comment.

Yeah, sadly I fell this is a case where it din't get the appreciation it deserved. I think the audience for it will keep growing and growing with time... as it deserves.

What a great movie to review for New Years!

The first time I saw this, I literally pissed myself laughing at "The Misbehavers"; the part where the room goes up in flames. Thank g*d I was at home watching this on tape!

Hey!

I know, I still remember the first time I saw it... tears of laughter where coming out of my eyes . The 3 room is probably my favourite ... the flames, when the girl just puts Tim in is place over the phone... the ending hehehe Really something!
