Capsule Film Review: Mean Guns (1997)

in #film5 years ago

Plot quite familiar to today’s players of PUBG and Apex Legends was used two decades ago in an action film Mean Guns. Gang boss (played by Ice T) gathers hundred of most vicious killers that had betrayed Syndicate in a newly built prison; they are all condemned to death but three of them might not only be spared but also collect huge reward if they survive next six hours fighting each other to death. Directed by Albert Pyun, Mean Guns is surprisingly good film for his standards, benefiting mostly from interesting characters played by diverse cast, among which the best known are Christopher Lambert and Deborah Van Valkenburgh as members of temporary survival alliance. Action is followed by mambo music that give those sense of irony to those scenes, but Pyun manages to compromise his vision by adding too much pathos and melodrama in finale.
