Capsule Film Review: Guardian Angels (Les anges gardiens, 1995)

In 1995 French comedy Guardian Angels has somewhat interesting "buddy buddy" concept which is both simple and complicated. Gerard Depardieu plays Antoine Carco, owner of Paris night club with a criminal past, while Christian Clavier plays Father Herve Tarain, a Catholic priest. Two men join forces with an aim of rescuing a boy, who happens son of Antoine’s friends, from criminals in Hong Kong. Matters are complicated with an arrival of "guardian angels" – ethereal creatures that look like protagonists’ doubles but behave like their opposites. Co-written by Clavier and director Jean-Marie Poiré, a team that had success with popular comedy Les Visiteurs few years earlier, this film lacks proper doses of humour. Instead audience is served with a series of action scenes and display of CGI technology which looked primitive even for mid 1990s standards.<
