MAKING OF KNITTED MONSTER MOVIE! + FILM. Hand knitted multimedia animation promo for music festival.

in #film8 years ago

Hi Steemit!

Long Division Festival is based in Wakefield, West Yorkshire and has featured bands like The Cribs, Ash, Pulled Apart by Horses etc.

In 2014 Mark ( @bobbins )and I were approached to make an animation to advertise the extra day added to the festival. The Sunday was a fringe event which meant that various pubs, shops and other buildings were going to be transformed into mini venues for the weekend (like they do at Edinburgh Fringe).

FILM CONCEPT (CLOVERFIELD/ GODZILLA):

We decided the best way to showcase the town was to have our main character and festival organiser Dean Freeman (in wool form), giving us a tour of the city, moving from venue to venue, all while a knitted 'Godzilla' type monster destroys the city. All of the sets that you see are all taken from real buildings in Wakefield. We gave a wobbly cam/ found footage feel to it as a homage to Cloverfield and other witness account style monster films.
Our film had to incorporate the venues so we built various sets using card and wood and dressed all the sets in felt and wool.

THE MONSTER:
Below are a few of the many stills in the animated sequences for the monster

Monter tail:

Monster claw swipe:

Monster stomp:

In Cloverfield you never see the full monster but throughout the film more and more is gradually revealed. We used this idea and showed a beady eye looking through a window, a tail destroying a building, a claw appearing over a roof etc. We animated the separate elements of the monster using a red backdrop, keyed out the background and placed them into the film in post production.

Our characters were made by hand as individual body parts (head, body, arms etc.). Once these parts were knitted/ stitched they were photographed from several different angles and pieced together (rigged) in Aftereffects where they were animated. This allowed us to pose our characters in a variety of ways.

Here is the finished film:

Overall I am happy with this, there are a few things I would have done differently if we would have had more time but it was a very good learning experience for us. If anyone has any questions about how the film was made or the animation process I'd be happy to answer any questions I can

Thanks for watching :)
