You have to see “The Long Goodbye” not because of Arnold (who is not even listed in the credits), but because it is just a good film that has not lost its charm in 45 years. The fact that at one time looked like a banter over "noir" detectives, now it seems easy irony. The film is light, old-fashionedly leisurely (one of the modern directors would try to devote the first ten minutes to feeding the cat) and a little sad, like a jazz melody, passing with a leitmotif through the whole story.
The main character, private detective Philip Marlowe (who in the film is called Marlborough, then Mauser) is a charismatic and noble man. He drives an antediluvian car, does not release cigarettes from his mouth, and seems to be even sleeping in a suit and tie. He looks constantly relaxed, just like the Dude from “Big Lebowski” (by the way, this film was also shot based on the story of Raymond Chandler), it’s as if the crimes themselves are being committed and then they open themselves up in his presence.
At some point, Marlow August's gangster needed Marlowe's detective abilities, and among his bodyguards a 27-year-old Schwarzenegger flashed on the screen.
After the terrible accent Arnold showed in Hercules in New York, in the second film he was assigned the role of a deaf-and-dumb bodyguard. For the role would fit any thug, not necessarily Mr. Universe. Curiously, didn’t Arnold suggest to insert a scene in the film in which all the men in the room get naked (demonstrating that they have nothing to hide from each other). Schwarzenegger's participation in “The Long Goodbye” did not add points to the film. Apart from the fact that for many fans of the actor, it was the occasion to watch a good movie.
