Thirty years ago, this semi-documentary film was honored by the inhabitants of the gymnasiums no less than “Commando”, “Predator” and “Terminator” (although it was more difficult to watch it). I remember how a classmate told me with delight: "And then another jock climbed onto the stage, inflated a rubber hot-water bottle and - BANGSH!"
The film about bodybuilders was filmed during the Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia competitions of 1975, which were held one day apart in Pretoria, South Africa. 28-year-old Arnold Schwarzenegger was going to become Mr. Olympia for the sixth consecutive time, setting a new record.
The main opponent of Arnold in his weight category was the young Lou Ferrigno. He never became Mr. Olympia either in the 75th or in the following years, but he walked around Arnold in the casting for the TV series The Incredible Hulk, as he was 10 cm higher. Until now, all the Halki in all the numerous "Avengers" speak in Ferrigno's voice.
Arnold's competitor in the category up to 90 kg was the “Sardinian strongman” Franco Colombo, the very “other jock with a hot-water bottle”. Colombo became Mr. Olympia twice, "strictly after Schwarzenegger", in 1976 and in 1981.
Ken Waller, who played the opponent of Arnold in the movie "Stay Hungry", this year became Mr. Universe. To give the film spice, Waller and Schwarzenegger were assigned the role of "bad guys." One of them steals a competitor's shirt from the locker room in order to bring down his mood (in fact, not). Another admits that he did not go to the funeral of his father in order to maintain his own mood before the competition (in fact, yes, Arnold did not attend the funeral of his father and older brother).
After the expected and well-deserved victory, “The One and Only Arnold” (as he is called from the stage) reports that he is leaving professional sports and will no longer take part in competitions (in fact, not).
“Pumping Iron” is a great motivational and bodybuilding film. And the name Arnold after the release of the film on the screens has become a household word.
