Scorsese Fans - Time to get Excited - His New Film is About to Drop.
Scorsese's highly anticipated film,"Silence" will make a limited release on December 23rd, as a Christmas gift for those who are lucky enough to see it. For the rest of us mortals, the full release will follow soon after in early January. The release date enables it to qualify for this year's awards season and it's already being tipped to be an Oscar contender. Filmed mainly at Taiwan's CMPC Studios and produced at an estimated cost of $51,000,000, many are anxious to see the result, myself included.
Andrew Garfield as Father Rodrigues & Japanese Actor Shin’ya Tsukamoto as a villager named Mokchi.
THE PLOT:
The film is based on the novel "Silence" written by Shusaku Endo, & the screenplay was written by Scorsese together with Jay Cocks (Gangs of New York). While details are limited, the story of "Silence" follows two seventeenth century priests who face persecution as they travel to Japan to find their mentor and spread the faith of Christianity. However, under the Tokugawa shogunate, Catholicism and practically contact with foreigners has been banned. The priests witness the persecution of Japanese Christians at the hands of the Japanese government wishing to purge the country of any western influence.
The Back-Story:
The movie has been a passion-project of Scorsese's since the early 90's. Many doubters thought that it would never see the light of day, and it would be relegated to the files of great movies that were never made, such as Kubrick's "Napolean". When asked about how he managed to maintain interest in the project for 25 years; Scorsese's response:
"As you get older, ideas go and come. Questions, answers, loss of the answer again and more questions, and this is what really interests me. Yes, the cinema and the people in my life and my family are most important, but ultimately as you get older, there’s got to be more. Much, much more. The very nature of secularism right now is really fascinating to me, but at the same time do you wipe away what could be more enriching in your life, which is an appreciation or some sort of search for that which is spiritual and transcends? That’s one of the reasons why I made the George Harrison documentary. Silence is just something that I’m drawn to in that way. It’s been an obsession, it has to be done...It’s a strong, wonderful true story, a thriller in a way, but it deals with those questions."
THE CAST:
Personally, I can't wait to see this movie, and I hope it lives up to Scorcese's high standards...I am sure it will. There is no trailer released yet (not that I can find), but here is a short review.
I'm really looking forward to this movie!!!
I want to get excited, but he might be past his prime.
Vinyl was so bad that I think they had to cancel it and Boardwalk Empire was slow-good, but never great, which seems almost impossible with the source material, an insane budget and an amazing cast. So I am afraid that he has lost his magic which is not uncommon for aging directors.
Wolf of Wall Street- 2013, Hugo- 2011, Shutter Island- 2010, The Departed- 2006. I would still say there is plenty of quality there. Anyway let's hope we are not disappointed. :)
Heh, I forgot to add:
