A Silent Tear Drop: A 50-Word Short Story
Rod’s heart pounded rapidly as he counted to ten. He couldn’t breathe.
His emotions swelled inside … mind spinning out-of-control.
Shaking and sweating, Rod remembered his mother saying, “Son, big boys don’t cry.”
Suddenly, a silent tear rolled down his face to the sound of prison doors slamming behind him.
I hope you enjoyed this 50-word short story that I created using the prompt for this week “tear” created by @jayna in the #fiftywords writing challenge.
The sound of prison bars closing behind you can be very disconcerting even when your freedom is only temporarily taken as a visitor. Unfortunately, that sound is why many prisoners don’t get visits. It is all you can do to keep from tearing up, when your goal is to cheer up. Silent tears are rarely tears of joy.
So true. Sometimes men do not want to cry and are taught as young boys to be brave and not show emotions.
This really puts me in the character's shoes. By the time I read the last sentence, I can feel his mixed unpleasant (is "unpleasant" an understatement for this?) emotions of being in prison. Really well written!
