Tearing at the Pain
I love that this week's prompt for the #fiftlywords challenge hosted by @jayna was a word with multiple meanings. It really opened up the possibilities for story creation! Here is my humble attempt at that challenge:
She began to tear at her hair and skin as the feelings of despair gripped her in their claws.
Would the feelings of pain and anguish never abate? This path must veer to a brighter course before all that is left of her is the tattered remains of her soul.

Ah yes, there it is. I was wondering if anyone would choose to write a story with this meaning of the word “tear.” With this anguished tale, you could have gone either way!
I always, always want to go the path opposite of the normal crowd. In hindsight, I should have worked both interpretations into the story. Maybe next time......
I can see why you may have been tempted to use both! But perhaps it would have been too “cute,” which is not what you were going for.
Excellent observation and I think you are right.
I probably would've gone with this meaning of the word too - that's what grabbed me immediately, but it may have been the image you included that got me thinking of this meaning, rather than my psyche!!
Well done on this - it can't be easy fitting power and substance into only fifty words.
Thanks. I found the challenge a few weeks ago and have enjoyed participating.
Nice take on the prompt... Harrowing stuff, but very well written. Well done.

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.
That was deep and powerful. The photo that you chose to illustrate your thoughts is right on point. I had to read your submission twice before I felt the full effect, because I got caught up in your use of the word “claws” to describe despair.
Thank you for your comment and support. I really enjoyed writing it and I will definitely participate in the future.
