50 word Story Contest Week #17 Sophistree
Green, edible, lumpy apples adorn the squat tree. Maurice plucks one. He examines its pockmarks and scars. He finds no sign of rot. It's just a wild fruit, maybe a bit unripe. The sour juice puckers his lips, and he quivers. The tree becomes a man. Maurice becomes a tree.

Best one I've read so far. I loved the use of taste. Wondering now whether Maurice turns into another "squat tree" or a perhaps a more picturesque one. ;-)
And what does the tree who became a man feel like? Does he have tree feelings? Was he always a tree, or is he again the man that he was? Was there a tree man before him? What will happen if I eat an apple?
