Jim no longer had any memory of his children or his beloved wife of 30 years; the disease had taken it all. But somehow he remembered the location of the gun cabinet, how to load the bullets and how to put the gun against his head and pull the trigger.

What a bastardly disease. Chilling story.
Thanks Hon. It's loosely based on my father who had dementia. Although he couldn't even remember how to make a cup of tea or put his socks on, he still managed to climb up onto a chair which he'd placed atop a table so he could reach an open window and throw himself out.

Alzheimer’s is a terrible thing. I’ve experienced it with family members and neighbors, but certainly nothing as tragic as this. I think anything is possible with those suffering from dementia, and cannot imagine how hard it must be to care for patients. You would never know what might happen if they are left unattended.
Yes indeed. It is a cruel, cruel disease, as much for the family as for the sufferer. Thanks a lot for reading.
howdy deirdyweirdy! my oh my...what a sobering scenario and even more so after I read your comments about your father. Wow. I guess the only good thing about that event is that he had enough awareness to take control and end his life on his terms.
