Knowing he'd be brought to book for the vicious assault upon her was all that kept her sane, and until the words 'not guilty' slipped from the juror's lips, she could not have believed herself capable of grabbing the security guard's gun and shooting her rapist square in the chest.

Holy WOW that was powerful! It's so sad that now she'll be punished by the same system that claimed he was innocent.
Isn't that just typical of the way our upside-down world seems to work.
lol.. oh wait this isn't a funny one..or is it? Great job deirdyweirdy, no one creates so much emotion in 50 words as you do! And then of course the highly sought after artwork creates a whole other type of emotion!

Wow. Intense story, @deirdyweirdy!! I was wondering if someone would use that interpretation of the word "book" in a story.
Well, she will end up behind bars, of course. But perhaps that is a better outcome, from her perspective, than spending a life stewing in her fury over the assault and injustice of the jury outcome. Sadly, I think this scenario -- sexual predators getting off free after assaulting women -- is fairly common. I don't understand it. At all.
The story was prompted by an article I came across yesterday reporting that in a survey on gender-based violence commissioned by the European Commission, 10% of the respondents thought sex without consent could potentially be justified if the victim had somehow not said no clearly enough.
Yes, she will likely end up behind bars but as you say, knowing her attacker got off scot-free would be its own kind of prison.
