Dr. Samuel Bransen followed the directions from the mirror for a few minutes, during which he crossed the dangerous frozen river into the wider wood on the other side. He walked a long distance through this with the wind blowing eerily through the bare branches above, until he came to what looked like an old wooden shack.

Was this what Edwin was leading him to? It made no sense –the man might have been crazy, but he had been rich enough. He glanced down at the mirror to be sure. The compass was pointing directly to the shack. Samuel blew out a breath, then stepped up to the door.

There was a loud click, and the door swung open of its own accord. Samuel paused –inside was pitch black. For the briefest moment, he wondered if he was making a grave mistake. Even if he wasn’t insane, should he get involved in this? But in his heart, he knew the truth: it was already too late to turn around. And he really wanted to know what was going on here.

He took a breath and crossed the threshold.

Behind him, the door swung shut.

Samuel stood still, trying to pierce the all-encompassing darkness. He could see nothing, not even the mirror in his hand. The sounds of the woods outside was totally shut out. Inside the shack was completely silent.

“Okay,” Samuel muttered. “What next?”

As if in response to his question, bright florescent lights suddenly blazed on, blinding Samuel for a second. He blinked rapidly and began to raise his hand to shield his eyes, but then let it fall slowly. His eyes were wide. The ‘shack’ was not a shack at all. Inside, it was covered on every surface by sparkling white tiles. A clean, ultramodern computer sat on a lone, metal desk with a smartphone by its side. But that wasn’t what made Samuel’s jaw drop. In front of every wall except the one with the desk, hung a huge mirror, reaching from the ceiling to a few inches from the floor. In the mirrors, Samuel saw himself, looking flummoxed but awestruck. And beside him stood Dr. Edwin Branth.

There was a slight whirring sound. “Welcome, Dr. Bransen,” Edwin said from the mirror.

Samuel started. He had already chalked it down as a rule that voices couldn’t be transmitted through the mirror from wherever Edwin was.

“I can hear you!” He gasped.

At the exact same time, his heard another voice, very similar to his exclaim: “I thought he can’t hear us?”

He spun to face himself in the mirror. He had no doubt what he had heard: his mirror-self talking with Edwin. The Samuel in the mirror stared back at him with the exact same look in his eyes. But the reflection wasn’t completely matching. Samuel held the side mirror from his car in his hand, but in the mirror, his hand was empty.

His eyes found the inconsistency at the same time as his reflection in the mirror. Two voices shrieked together, “What the heck is going on?”

Edwin raised his hands in a calming gesture, facing the Samuel in the mirror. “Samuel, please relax.” And then he turned to face Samuel himself, who was watching the exchange incredulously. “And you too, Dr. Bransen. Look I know this is startling and crazy and confusing, but I’m going to need you both to keep a level head. I will explain everything.”

Both?” The Samuels asked.

Edwin nodded. “Yes, both. You are scientists, and we’ve discussed this before, so I believe you already have an idea what’s going on, don’t you, Samuel?”

Neither Samuel nor his reflection in the mirror said anything. His heart was racing in anticipation.

Edwin nodded again. “I see you do. It is real, Samuel. The mirror dimension is real.”
