Samuel felt dazed. What was going on? Was the intense cold affecting his brain? Or had he finally gone crazy from all the stress at the lab? He shivered, whether from the cold drafts or fear, he couldn't tell. Probably both.
In the mirror, Edwin was typing away on his ipad again. His lips were moving, but no sound escaped through the glass.
"What? What are you saying?" Samuel asked, feeling foolish. He was communicating with the reflection of a dead man through the side mirror of his car. Edwin raised the ipad up again. Samuel read what it said.
"Break off my car mirror and go into the store? That's... that's just crazy! I can't do that!"
But Edwin was already typing again, his fingers flying urgently over the screen. In a moment, the ipad was back up. Can't explain now, we have to move, it said. They are coming.
Samuel felt another chill. "Who? Who is coming?" He asked. His voice shook, but he wasn't sure it mattered anyway. Edwin couldn't hear him on the other side of the mirror, could he?
Edwin raised the ipad one last time. Hurry! It said. They are here. And he disappeared from the mirror. Samuel's reflection returned for a moment, but as he watched, his mirror self bought down something hard on the device, and suddenly, the reflection made no sense at all. From the glimpses he could catch, it seemed like the mirror was moving on the other side. But he didn't have time to contemplate what it meant. From up the road, a convoy of four, unmarked black cars were approaching speedily, and though they could be anything, these cars had a sort of implied menace to them. He had no doubts --this was the 'they' Edwin had meant. And they were coming for him.
He made his decision. There was a large stone nearby. Without thinking too much about what he was doing, he picked it up and hit the mirrors connection with as much strength as he could muster. It splintered immediately. He grabbed it and ran into the same store he had seen the adolescents enter just a few minutes ago, then stood hidden at the window.
The cars all screeched to a halt around his. Tough looking men, some in suits, others in tactical gear, jumped out. They were all holding automatic weapons, trained towards the car.
What on Earth had Edwin gotten him into?
