Nevendar: The wizard's tale - Sunrise - part 1

in #fiction7 years ago (edited)

Introduction - This is a story I wrote a while ago, but it was never finished. I have changed it and went in different directions, corrected what I thought could be better. As I like to post my stories I have posted it on different web sites, so I hope that I have all the links, if not please inform me to confirm if that is my story posted on a different web site, link.
This will be a first part of the Nevendar: The wizard's tale.

town street

As the warm light slowly engulfs the rooftops, very few can resist to stay asleep for long. A small town lied only half a day walk from a large, fast flowing river. North of the town is a hill. This time of the year, it is green and yellow. When the Spring comes back, entire landscape is covered in red, orange and white. On the first day when flowers start blooming, every town and village built under Sunny Peeks celebrates the Awakening festival. It is even held, to a lesser extant, in the city of Amberige.

The town called Norfolk prides itself for being much older them most in the region. Dating back to almost four hundred years ago. There were only two settlements that were similar age. One of them was capitol of the region, Amberige. Being, slightly less, then two hundred years older and Tockt some fifty years younger.

From the beginning people who stared it knew what they were doing. Each street was built on purpose. Each building was there because it was planed that way. Streets were wide enough for two large transport carriages to drive through with ease. There are several larger buildings near the center. One of those is the town hall. It served as the courthouse. In many ways it is the most important part of Norfolk. Not just that it was one of the first buildings built, it was also in its very center. If looked from above, it would seam as if the whole town was a spiral, that circled around the town hall. It is still unknown what the purpose for this was, but the original builders took great effort for each street to be exactly symmetrical and to form a squared spiral.

town square

Three streets North, is the hospital. A large building, painted in white and yellow. It has a bright red roof. By some accounts it is one of the oldest, still standing, structures in Norfolk. Not counting the town hall, it is the second only to the chapel and ceramics manufactorium. On the other side of the town is the chapel. It was made to stand the test of time and out live everything else people built. It is made out of large, finely cut stone. Each one has smooth edges. Most of the stones are gray, but there are large number of white stones in the front wall. It was dedicated to the old gods, most of whom died in the last great celestial war. Not much is known of the event, just that it happened a very long time ago. It is not even known who were the gods fighting against.

The main export in Norfolk are ceramics. Most popular being their ornamented tea cups and small flower pots, used for miniature plants. Most of the ceramics are produced in the ceramics manifactorum, located far South, at the very edge of the town, ending the outer most spiral street. This is by most definitions the largest building in Norfolk. It is a sturdy construction, made a long time ago, but remodeled, repaired, rebuilt several times. Thanks in part to it being a much simpler building and several fires, one that threatened the town itself. For a long time manufacturing porcelain and to a lesser extent other ceramics, has enabled townsfolk to live a carefree life.
