Makare- Story Idea

The makarios are a group of people who can think or wish a thing into existence. You know your child was born a makare when you suddenly appear in their room without any memory of walking into it, or when a bottle or a rattle suddenly appear in their hand when it was too far for an infant to reach. Then the real trials begin. For infants have simple wants, simple needs, but as their thoughts become more complex, so too do their wishes. Toddler Makarios create monsters out of shadows, simply because they imagine them to be there, and those monsters can wreak havoc on an unimaginable scale once they are thought into being. Toddlers might wish their own shadow out of existence on a sunny day. Siblings who annoy a Makarios may suddenly disappear, or die an ignoble and sudden death. Parents of makare children who don't know any better may drug or abandon their children, just to escape the ravages of their thoughts and wishes made flesh. Few make it to adulthood, as ignorant communities often mob together to rid themselves of the scourge of a Makare in their midst. And who can blame them? Do you remember the things that you wished as a teenager? As a pre-teen? Much less as a child? How many petty, awful things did you hope would come to pass against bullying peers, or adults who put logical restrictions against you?

The few Makaroioi who did make it to adulthood created a community, their only goal to rescue these children and raise them to be effective members of the community. These adults have learned to control their thoughts, and created a new syntax so that they never spoke a wish accidentally into being. Conversation between a Makarios and a (term for regular human) could be frustratingly complex- for a Makarios can only make observations about things currently in existence, and cannot state their own thoughts or opinions, for fear of making such a thing come true.

They learned to control their own powers, and they taught the young Makarios to control theirs... or else face daunting discipline. Many learn the art of thinking one thing, but speaking another. They learn to control their dreams, or to sleep dreamlessly, so that even when they are unconscious they don't create something dangerous or horrible.
