Whimsical Pretenses - Chapter 3 (Fiction)
Chapter 3 – The Suicide Plan
Mia was a complete disaster; she looked at herself in the mirror. Her face was a mess; she declined all work for a week…her life just shattered to pieces.
It was her dream to be married. She was always looking at bridal magazines, how she always loved weddings and the idea of spending a lifetime with "The One": just like the stories people read in romance books.
Her aunt who raised her was a spinster. Her longing to have a complete family was her longtime dream since she was a kid. Her mother was an overseas worker but she wasn’t able to spend time with her. She never knew her father…all she knew was her parents met in an airport and travelled once together and that’s how she was born.
Because of the lack of information about her parents, she weaved and concocted imaginations of fairy tale stories on her own: about how she will meet her prince Charming and rescue her from the dark castle she was in. She was determined to have her own complete family and happy ending.
She thought it was Jake. They were classmates in elementary. While reading her fairy tale pocketbook in an area under a tree, a bully approached her and took the book away. She tried to run after him, but she tripped and when she was about to fall on her knees, a boy who just transferred from another school caught her and helped her get up. Turned out the bully was Jake's cousin and asked him to return the book which he obliged right away. And the rest is history until…
“She’s pregnant.” The words still echoed in her head.
She looked at her reflection again. Her hair was in disarray, her eyes resembled with that of a panda, and a wretched look on her face.
“This is not supposed to happen. You are that princess; you should have a happy ending.” She talked slowly to herself as if she was repeating a memorized piece.
Her phone has been ringing day in and day out. She didn’t care anymore. She hasn’t bathed for three days. She was still in her pajamas. Food wrappers from takeout were all over the place.
Someone knocked on the door. “Mia, Mia!”
Her phone kept on ringing and vibrating underneath a pizza carton.
“Mia Mendoza, open the door this is important, dammit!” It was Patricia’s voice, her business partner.
She just hid and lied down face flat on the floor. She didn't want anybody to know she was there.
“I know you’re in there! You better open this door or I will call the sheriff!” Patricia shouted. “Open the door, how could you! I have summons letters from the court! You didn’t go to the Martinez and Chan’s wedding!”
Mia kept still. She knew she was in big trouble but she didn’t care. She just wanted to escape.
“You’re in big trouble! Just because your wedding was stopped doesn’t mean you have to abandon us and your work Mia! How selfish can you get?”
Even Patricia’s words didn’t matter. She was just numb.
She got up looked at the eviction notices, and her credit card bills. She was way in too deep.
How can I get away? Suicide? Why not? Everything is lost anyway along with all of her hopes, she thought.
Yes it may be cliché’ but how can she go on and live when love was the only one thing she craved about all her life. Jake promised her, they both promised to love each other for better or for worse and now this happened. She wanted to let Jake feel the pain she went through by making him feel guilty. Selfish as it may sound, she just couldn’t let go of her anger. She then went to get a pen and listed all possible suicide attempts. She knew she just had to be dramatic when she leaves life.
Option Number 1:
Hang herself. The thought of herself hanging is quite morbid. What if she returns as a ghost headless? Not a pretty picture.
Option Number Number 2:
Slash her wrist. Ugghh she hates blood. She doesn’t want to see it dripping away from her.
Option Number Number 3:
Drink poison. She’s picky on what she puts on her mouth and is very particular with flavors. That’s why she was best in food tasting during wedding preparations.
Option Number 4:
Jump on top of a building. It could be possible. She’s not afraid of heights. Impact would be instantaneous!
She knew she had to put some things in order. She needed to clean her condominium unit, placed all her belongings in boxes. Labeled each of them and wrote notes. Farewell notes, one for her aunt and two of her friends and her neighbor.
Reviewed her list again and she knew she made her choice.
Andrew pulled over to a big building. Tightened his grip on the car handle.
He then went out of the car and stood on the sidewalk in front of the entrance. He examined every inch of the building’s exterior with a grim face. He fixed his eyes on all the 21 floors of the man-made structure.
He clenched his fist as he scanned the gold plated signage in front: Minerva Suites by ARAS Group
He stepped back and looked up at the topmost part. And he noticed a white sheet glistening on the rooftop the light translucently. And finally focusing his eyes he saw a person, a woman to be exact. Extending her arms standing on the edge of the ledge.
Oh is she about to commit suicide? Andrew thought. Without hesitating he then rushed inside to the elevator. He signaled the old guard who identified him, nodded his head, shouted: "Call emergency! Someone’s at the roof!"
He hoped it was not too late to save whoever that was.
Nearly everything you do is of no importance, but it is important that you do it.
